Planning a walking holiday in the Peak District this year? You might want to consider staying at Roaches Retreat Eco Glampsite, a small, family-friendly site five minutes' drive from the market town of Leek, in Staffordshire. You’ll be sleeping on solid pine beds in comfortable 6m bell tents. Bedding and towels are provided, as well as cosy blankets to huddle under on cool nights spent stargazing. What’s more, each tent comes with its own private washroom with a hot shower (and its own composting toilet, too), so you won’t have to queue behind other guests for your turn. See that rocky ridge in the distance? That’s the Roaches, a popular walking and climbing area that you can reach within a five-minute drive from the site – or a one-hour hike skirting around Hen Cloud mountain. In the nearby village of Upperhulme (10 minutes’ walk) there are mountain-biking and climbing companies that can guide you through this hilly district. And there’s more to this region than just climbing and hiking, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Tittesworth Reservoir (five minutes) too. Back at the site, you can fire up the barbecue (provided) or cook a meal in the well-equipped outdoor kitchen with double gas hob and washing-up area. The site is completely off grid, and lighting is provided by solar power, plus there are recycling points. A 10-minute walk takes you to the nearest pub, and there is a tea room a five-minute drive away, plus plenty of restaurants and shops in Leek. Please note that groups of adults are not accepted at Roaches Retreat Eco Glampsite (maximum of two adults per pitch).

Bell tent

Liked: We had a lovely time at the campsite. There are two tents on the site and we were the only ones there for the duration of our stay. The tent was incredibly large and spacious, enough room for an extra travel cot. The views from the tent were spectacular and we enjoyed sitting by the fire looking at the views. The toilet and shower area were perfect, and a bonus that they were private. The kitchen area was a good size and provided the essential pots and pans. No cars were allowed by the tent, so we had to use a wheelbarrow to transport our things, which was not a problem, except the path to and from the tent was a little bumpy. There were games/activities for children to play, such as a mud kitchen and chalk. Nicola, the owner, was always prompt to answer our questions, which was reassuring when visiting a new place. There is so much to do within a short distance of the site and lots of amenities in case you forget cooking essentials or it rains.
