  • Simple dog-friendly site in the south of the Shropshire Hills
  • In between Clun and Knighton, both 10 minutes' drive away
  • Great stargazing on site; footpath opposite for access to walks
Setting your sights on a scenic walking break in the Shropshire Hills? Bag a pitch at Along The Milky Way and you’ll be in prime position to get out along the trails of this lovely rural area. This simple pop-up site sits alongside the river Redlake about 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Clun (in England) and Knighton (just over the border in Wales). It’s easily accessed from the A488, a couple of minutes’ drive away, and there’s a footpath just across the road from the camping field so you’ll be able to get straight out for strolls. Whether you’re planning to wander along the riverbank, explore some of the Offa’s Dyke Path or amble around the best historic towns in Shropshire, you’ll be well placed at this quiet little site, which is a little bit away from some of the busiest parts of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Dogs are welcome to join you here as long as they promise to be well behaved around the wildlife that lives on and around the site. Things have been kept simple on site, with just toilets and showers on the facilities front. The real bonus of this approach is that it makes sure there’s no light pollution to spoil your evenings of stargazing – the skies around often have some dazzling displays (hence the name of the site…) Both Clun and Knighton have plenty of amenities to keep you fed and watered – between them they muster several pubs, cafés, takeaways and shops, and Knighton also has a railway station for travels further afield.

What customers say

This small, peaceful campsite offers generous pitches in a beautiful, rural setting with stunning views and exceptional stargazing opportunities. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful owners, Jack and Mandy, who provide thoughtful touches and a warm welcome. Facilities are generally described as basic but clean and well-maintained. While some mention the approach road and access can be tight, and the toilet/shower facilities may be limited when the site is busy, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Everything, flat pitches, good room between pitches, beautiful tranquil area. The owners were thoughtful and provided everything you could possibly need with some extra touches in case you forget toiletries. Fire pits were free and you could buy logs or coal for your BBQ, I would give them all the stars. The owners even came round in the evening to say hello which I thought was rare and a lovely touch

Disliked I wanted to stay longer

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked We had such a lovely stay at this campsite. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcome. Jack came straight over to help us when our campervan’s power failed, and nothing was too much trouble.

It’s a real hidden gem, and the night sky was incredible—we were lucky enough to see the most amazing display of stars and even the Milky Way.

The campsite has everything you could need, and we’re so grateful they were able to accommodate us at the last minute. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay again and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, friendly campsite.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely small 'pop-up' site (ie only open for a max of 60 days/ year under planning rules), which is comfortably small (I guess around 10 pitches but didn't count), but pitches themselves are generous. Situated around halfway between the beautiful towns of Clun and Knighton, it is tucked away in a natural bowl with field & tree views 360 degrees. It's rare in that traffic noise cannot be heard, just occasional agricultural traffic - otherwise it's just birds (lots of sparrows and spectacular views of the red kites close up), sheep and cows. This reminds me of camping as a child, a really natural wholesome environment with local footpaths and streams to paddle and explore (paddling in the ford at Clun was lovely on a hot day). The facilities are basic and clean - everything you need without any excesses of luxury accommodation. Owners are really friendly and thoughtful from supplying essentials to providing barbecue/firepits and offering firewood available at a modest cost. Lastly as the name might suggest - clear skies above are filled with an untarnished view of thousands of stars at night. Best breakfast / coffees in the area is at the Maltings Cafe in Clun. It's better than the pictures on Pitchup show, and there is more shelter / shade from trees in several parts of the field than the pictures suggest.

Disliked Not an issue for us as site was quiet for most of our stay, although one toilet and one shower would not be enough if the site is busy. However, as a popup site, we understand this is a starting point and the owners have plans to develop the site facilities, it didn't detract from our stay in any way.

Liked We had a lovely time staying here or 2 nights during the May halfterm break with our 2 young boys. It's a beautiful location and a great, quiet, friendly, family feel campsite. The owners are lovely and happy to help. It is dog friendly, has a useful fridge and freezer, shower and a small stream just outside the entrance which is lovely for cooling your feet on a hot day...or giving you dog a drink! :)
All in all, we had a really great time

There are plenty of options for walks in this area, whether you choose to stay local or head out to a hotspot like Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (40 minutes’ drive). The Offa’s Dyke Path is a popular trail too, and you can find out more about it at the Offa’s Dyke Centre in Knighton (10 minutes). As well as country rambles, the area has some lovely urban strolls. You may like to start in Clun (10 minutes) to see the 15th-century packhorse bridge and the ruins of Clun Castle.
