General

  • Scenic luxury shepherd's huts on the banks of Llangollen Canal
  • A 15-minute drive from Whitchurch and 30 minutes from Shrewsbury
  • Dog-friendly site with small shop, café (open daily) and village green

Fancy hols watching the world drift by – and getting out and about in it? Chug along to Whixall Marina, 15 minutes’ drive from the pretty Shropshire town of Whitchurch.

Whether making a quick stop on lengthy canal explores or staying put for a waterside getaway, this site is in just the right spot. On the banks of the Prees branch of the Llangollen canal, it’s well placed for puttering along in barges, and is about 20 leisurely water-filled miles from the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Ramblers and bikers can stay in the dry instead, following paths along the canalside or wandering Whixall Moss five minutes away – just the sort of jaunts canine chums will want to be along for...

There’s plenty here for stay-putters too: when lazy days on site are called for, there’s a café serving hot drinks and meals throughout the day, and the café terrace is a prime spot for sitting to watch the barges, ducks and swans pass by.

Too much bustle? Find a seat in the ‘village green’ next to the café and take in the calm pace of the marina while sipping on a tea or coffee.

The hut we stayed in was excellent. It was decorated very nicely and had everything and more than you need for a comfortable stay. It was clean, tidy, and warm and located on the canal Bank with our own firepit and picnic style table.
The huts are well spaced out so if others were being used at the same time as ours you wouldn't feel like you were crammed together.
The welcome pack in the hut had things in above anything we would ever expect and was a really lovely touch.
The toilets and shower block was clean and fairly spacious and the paths to it were slate chipping covered and not muddy in any way and well lit at night. With the added torch and umbrella in the hut covered any lighting or weather issue we may of had.
We would recommend Whixall Marina highly to anyone wanting to experience glamping and the marina manager is very friendly and welcoming.
    Hope to be back soon.

Evenings by the firepit watching the stars appear, who needs a TV.

We really enjoyed our stay the shepherds hut was lovely exactly like the photos posted on there site advertising them. They have everything in them you could need even have a draw with games in.
We lived our little welcome basket that was left for us and we really appreciated the firewood starter kit.
We liked the information booklet that was left in our hut it was very useful for information about the site and about surroundings area of things to do.
Myself, my dad & his two little dogs enjoyed our stay it was very comfortable peaceful and relaxing.
The site is nice and the marina is very pretty clean and tidy too.
The staff are lovely very helpful friendly kind they even lent us a fan as the day we arrived was extremely hot.
The shower toilet blocks are just a short walk from the shepherds huts very clean and nice.
There is a little cafe on site with WiFi as the signal can be bad at huts you can always pick it up there if you need to check your phones. Mine on O2 work down at the huts. We didn’t have food just coffee but the food at the cafe looked and smelled lovely.

    Disliked:

We didn’t like all the big weeds and stingers surroundings the shepherds huts as these weren’t in original photos and we were worried about dogs getting stung. The stingers and weeds did ruin view a little bit of canal and obviously the view in the original photos is why we chose to stay there. Lots of the boats that passed us all commented to us or we heard them saying to each other about how lovely the huts looked but couldn’t believe they were surrounded by stingers.
On check out day I didn’t say anything as we still enjoyed our stay but the nice man checking us out did comment to me that they are going to cut down all the stingers

Amazing shepherds huts with views of the canal and the countryside. Everything had been put in place to make our stay perfect. Our welcome pack was the best one we have ever recieved and had lots of personal touches to it. All the fixtures and fittings were brand new and of good quality. Staff were very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us when we arrived. We unloaded the car by the gate and then took our car back to the car park. Our weekend break had then started and breakfast in the marina cafe was perfect too. Lots of walks and places to go to around whixall. Great canal walks too.

Local attractions

Nature-filled days are a cinch hereabouts: the site’s a 15-minute drive from Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve on the England-Wales border, where there are rare dragonflies and craneflies to spy out, as well as pretty moths and butterflies, 166 species of bird, and lots of adders and lizards.

For outdoorsy days with a touch more control within half an hour of base, head instead for Cholmondeley Castle gardens or the award-winning Hodnet Hall Gardens. Both are in the grounds of stately homes, bringing a touch of old-worldy glamour to visits, and the fab Hawkstone Park Follies is 15 minutes away if 18th-century fantasy theme parks appeal.

Hawkstone may have got historians excited, so make stops at sprawling old piles like Attingham Park, Whittington Castle, Shrewsbury Castle and Chirk Castle – all within 40 minutes – or traipse along to Ironbridge Gorge to get a feeling for Britain’s Industrial Age with pit stops at Blists Hill Victorian Town, the china museum or the oldest cast-iron bridge in the world.

From Victorian towns to modern-day ones, trundle along next to the town of Shrewsbury, where there are museums and galleries, jailhouse tours, and boat tours along the Severn. Too slow-paced? It’s an 80-minute drive to Alton Towers, if hair-raising ‘coaster rides get blood pumping…

  • Cheshire Military Museum (20.5 miles)
