View of the hardstanding pitches

General

  • Well-kept, family-run and friendly park on the Welsh border
  • Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside
  • On a seven-acre smallholding 15 miles from Chester

Ladies, gents, solo travellers, couples, kids and the dog have quite the pick of places to roam around when staying at popular Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Site near Whitchurch, as it's on the border of Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire with several days'/weeks' worth of activities and attractions in each.

There'll be a rather warm welcome on site too from Pam, Richard and the team, who take pride in making their family-run park somewhere guests want to come back to – you'll see what that means when you get there…

Lady Willington is on a refined, peaceful and well-maintained seven-acre smallholding, which comes with first-class vistas of the surrounding Shropshire countryside. The pitches are decently sized and all have their own water supply and electric; other amenities include a toilet and a shower, a washing up sink, a fridge and freezer, a kettle, a hairdryer, and a washing machine and dryer (small extra charge applies).

Barbecues are allowed on site: for supplies, the market town of Whitchurch is about 10 minutes' drive to the east, while Wrexham is about 15 minutes west.

Please note

Facilities/activities including use of washing machine and dryer are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

As with most campsites it gets busy between 8am and 10am. Hot water is available 24 hours a day so best to try and avoid this time for showering if possible. The facilities are new and are kept immaculately clean.

With there being only one toilet and shower there was sometimes a wait for facilities but that isn't a complaint just one of those things... been camping at much worse and like i say facilitates were always clean and shower for a camp site was excellent.

Quiet, tucked away and well kept. Very friendly owners. We were the only people using the campsite so the facilities were enough for us.

The fridge was left in quite a dirty state and the freezer had completely frozen over and wouldn't shut properly.

decent sized pitches, lots of water taps, 16 amp electricity

    Disliked:

Facilities building - only one loo for both ladies and gents, only one shower, washing machine and freezer broken. Hairdryer and baby change not usable because not enough space. Cramped washing up sink, too close to toilet.
Not the site's fault but the long distance footpaths nearby are well signposted but inaccessible because the hedges have overgrown the styles.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. It says VERY clearly on our Pitch Up listing that we only have one toilet and one shower. This was also pointed out to you on arrival. Sadly someone camping over the weekend had left the freezer door open therefore this is why it was unable to be used. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you during your stay.
Sadly we have no control over the public footpaths.

The site was small and pretty quiet for 1 of the 2 night stay we were there. Site was clean only 3 tents and 3 caravans on site when we was there.

    Disliked:

When arrived I was given an information sheet which gave the rules on the site, one rule was peaceful site no loud music or noise especially after 11pm, we arrived on the Friday and set our tent up and around 8pm music started booming from the house. This went on til 11:30pm and then an hour of people shouting and laughing, it turned out to be a function being held. I found this a joke after we had our rules to keep quiet, however the Saturday night was very peaceful. Only one toilet and shower but we never had to queue to use, but did for the washing up area which was also in the toilet and shower area.

From the manager...

Hello Jane,
Thank you for your review.
With regards to your comment about the loud music during your stay, this was not coming from the Bed and Breakfast. The noise was coming from our next door neighbours who were having a big party. Sorry for any inconvenience this caused you however this was out of our control. I am pleased you found it peaceful on the Saturday night.
It is very clear on our Pitch Up listing that we only have one toilet and one shower. This was also pointed out to you on arrival. If you would have preferred more washing up and toilet facilities then you probably shouldn't have booked to stay at our site.

Local attractions

This be Roman country: nearby Whitchurch was founded by the rampaging lot around the time of Caesar (the first), on a main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter.

Chester, one of the main Roman towns, is about 40 minutes' drive from Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Site and has a Roman amphitheatre to see as well as Roman remains and a museum at Dewa Roman Experience. Fans of other history periods also come to Chester to see its medieval and black and white buildings and its Grade I listed city walls, among the best preserved city walls in Britain, and the 11th-century Chester Cathedral.

Back near base, stop off at the well-kept Whitchurch Heritage Centre to see some more Roman remains alongside exhibits and galleries taking the town up to modern times. Around the streets, make time too for the Clock Trail or one of the other several town trails: most fortuitously, most pass a pub…

Also anciently, several castles, historic houses and National Trust properties are within conquerable driving distance – Chirk Castle, Erddig Hall in Wrexham, Combermere Abbey, Cholmondeley Castle and Bolesworth Castle just to start you off. All have regular events, including an international show jumping event at Bolesworth, and a Pageant of Power, Pony Club Championships and garden openings at Cholmondeley.

Here to hike? Five long-distance walking trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the Shropshire Way which runs along to the Llangollen Canal, crossing the border between England and Wales. The Sandstone Trail, 34 miles through Cheshire and Shropshire, starts and finishes in the town.

Other sights and sites nearby are Shrewsbury and the follies at Hawkstone Park about 20 miles away, and the early nineteenth century Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carrying the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee, a World Heritage Site with the wondrous Horseshoe Falls. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is about an hour and a quarter's drive away.
