General

  • Well-kept, family-run and friendly park on the Welsh border
  • Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside
  • New and heated loo and shower block with baby changing and hairdryers

Ladies, gents, solo travellers, couples, kids and the dog have quite the pick of places to roam around when staying at popular Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Site near Whitchurch, as it's on the border of Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire with several days'/weeks' worth of activities and attractions in each.

There'll be a rather warm welcome on site too from Pam, Richard and the team, who take pride in making their family-run park somewhere guests want to come back to – you'll see what we mean when you get there…

Lady Willington is on a refined, peaceful and well-maintained seven-acre smallholding, which comes with first-class vistas of the surrounding Shropshire countryside, excellently-kept amenities and even a suntrap of a terrace within a walled garden for serene sunbathing.

The pitches are decently sized and all have their own water supply and electric. Amenities include a toilet and a shower, a washing up sink, a fridge and freezer, a kettle, a hairdryer, and a washing machine and dryer (small extra charge applies).

Barbecues are allowed on site: for supplies, the market town of Whitchurch is about six miles to the east, while Wrexham is about ten minutes' drive west.

Please note

Facilities/activities including use of washing machine and dryer are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

As with most campsites it gets busy between 8am and 10am. Hot water is available 24 hours a day so best to try and avoid this time for showering if possible. The facilities are new and are kept immaculately clean.

Lovely clean site, quiet location and small so felt happy giving kids a little more freedom, they loved the horses in field next to tent. Facilities kept tidy and Amelia helpful, washing machine and dryer handy if required but we didn't need while there.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet and shower which could cause a queue but good use of space available.

Clean surroundings. Not too far to travel to. Local towns 6+9 mile either direction. Nice hot shower. Water taps nearby. Peaceful. Nice walks

    Disliked:

One Shared toilet. Nearest pub too far to walk to. Asked to be quiet from 11pm but party going on in the house grounds totally ignored this rule. Only one shower and no room to get dressed comfortably. If you only want to wash the kids you have to use the sink in the toilet room while people wait to use the toilet. Grass should be cut short and cuttings removed. Filled dog poo bags left on the field. An actual welcome instead of coming to the front door and keeping us there while going through the bill, instead of asking you in and showcasing the house should you want to stay there next time. Feeling like you were second class being frowned upon by the people coming and going from the house.

A very well kept, clean site. A small but beautiful place to stay. Quiet countryside location but not too far away from local towns and only a two mile walk through country lanes to the nearest pub which is always a big plus for me.
If you enjoy walking, there are lots to offer.
    Very helpful and friendly hosts.

    Disliked:

Possibly would benefit from an enclosed area to let dogs off the lead.

Directions

From Birmingham, take the A41 north to Whitchurch then take the A525 signposted Wrexham. We are roughly 5 miles away from Whitchurch. When you pass the sign on the left for Little Arowry about 4.5 miles from the Esso garage in Whitchurch, look for the Horseman’s Green sign which is the next left. We are the next house on the left – a large red bricked Georgian Property set back from the road. Should you miss the first sign for Horseman’s Green, you will soon see another sign on the left. Take this one, pass Horseman’s Green Farm on the right, then bear left. Do not enter Horseman’s Green Village itself. Carry on along this road and Willington Grange is on the right. We are the next property on the right: take the main entrance (the second entrance).

From Wrexham, follow signs for the A525 posted for Bangor-on-Dee. When you get to the end of the very straight road you will approach a T-Junction. Take a right turn towards Whitchurch and we are approximately 5 miles along this road. Follow directions for the second Horseman’s Green sign at the brow of a hill. Turn right and Willington Lodge will be seen set back off the road.

Local attractions

This be Roman country: nearby Whitchurch was founded by the rampaging lot around the time of Caesar (the first), on a main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter.

Chester, one of the main Roman towns, is about 15 miles from Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Site and has a Roman amphitheatre to see as well as Roman remains and a museum at Dewa Roman Experience.

Fans of other history periods also come to Chester to marvel at its medieval and black and white buildings and its Grade I listed city walls, among the best preserved city walls in Britain. Eleventh century Chester Cathedral is one of the biggest tourist draws in the city.

Back near base, stop off at the well-kept Whitchurch Heritage Centre to see some more Roman remains alongside exhibits and galleries taking the town up to modern times. Around the streets, make time too for the Clock Trail or one of the other several town trails: most fortuitously, most pass a pub…

Also anciently, several castles, historic houses and National Trust properties are within conquerable driving distance – Chirk Castle, Erddig Hall in Wrexham, Combermere Abbey, Cholmondeley Castle and Bolesworth Castle just to start you off. All have regular events, including an international show jumping event at Bolesworth, and a Pageant of Power, Pony Club Championships and garden openings at Cholmondeley.

Here to hike? Five long-distance walking trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the Shropshire Way which runs along to the Llangollen Canal, crossing the border between England and Wales. The Sandstone Trail, 34 miles through Cheshire and Shropshire, starts and finishes in the town.

Other sights and sites nearby are Shrewsbury and the follies at Hawkstone Park about 20 miles away, and the early nineteenth century Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carrying the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee, a World Heritage Site with the wondrous Horseshoe Falls. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is about an hour and a quarter's drive away.

Must see

  • Chester Castle (15.5 miles)
  • Cheshire Military Museum (15.5 miles)
  • Chester Cathedral (15.9 miles)
