General

  • Peaceful and friendly site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Walkers' paradise with many strolls and hikes close by
  • Well-maintained amenities including access for disabled guests

Bring those boots made for walking, for you'll be hungry for the hikes around Shropshire's Ted's at Hunger Hill.

Based in Sheriffhales about four miles from Telford, this peaceful, friendly and popular little site is in land where walks are all around, meandering for miles through the wildlife havens of the green Shropshire countryside.

Ted's is a smallholding, with grass pitches on a gently sloping field set among the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sheep and ducks wander the site – the kids are welcome to say hi or go and meet some of the menagerie at the animal paddock – and free-range eggs and fresh meat are usually available for sale.

Among the well-maintained amenities are disabled-friendly showers and toilets, chemical disposal points and facilities for charging and recycling. There's easy access from the site to Sheriffhales village, just off the main A5.

A small and basic site, but with all the facilities you need. Great if you like a quiet site with not too many others around. It was great fun for the children to be involved with feeding the lambs every morning and 'Scotch Jim' was a mine of information, stories, suggestions and a great help with everything. Children can run around safely and were entertained by the chickens, ducks and even peacocks!
I loved the newly planted orchard and the fact that you are asked to use the water from your washing up to water the new trees. My kind of 'Eco' approach and it suited us very well.

    Disliked:

In such a quiet site, maybe a quiet after 10pm policy would suit the early risers amongst us, as we were quite disturbed by loud music from other campers.

Lovely site, and on arrival made to feel very welcome. Site was pretty busy being August B.Hol weekend, but Jim etc liaised with us quite easily so that we and our other friends were next door to each other rather than being separated as a tent and camper van set of couples. When offered to pay the remainder of our money on arrival, they said oh will see you later, now that's a first !!! Showers and loos although seemed small for the numbers on site were adequate, never had to queue. Met Ted, whom was a happy go lucky and friendly chap and again made us feel more than welcome, after asking our names the next time he saw us he remembered them when he said good morning etc - that's putting your customers first. Will certainly go back there as the site site is fairly new ( 3 years) so improvements being made all the time - how good is it to have 16amp electrics for your tent etc and yes would recommend this site to anyone who would like a good time away

    Disliked:

you always get one and that was day after bank holiday when site had quietened down in numbers, a campervan whom just drove on to the site pretty quickly and ignored everyone - thought they had the choice of the field. Jim stated to regards child safety etc to them and to go to a pitch nearest showers etc but they took umbridge to that and left - and then posted nasty comments that he was rude !!

From the manager...

Morning Derrick thanks for report it always takes 2 to say good morning how are you and be pleasant you were both a pleasure o the cake was light well risen and a pleasure to eat , take care Ted and Jim breaking news Jim still here .

Brilliant camp site, very basic but loads of room for my son to run around and play in. A lot bigger than I was expecting, but a real nice atmosphere to the place. Didn't have the pleasure of meeting Ted but was looked after by his helping hand who was a real star - Jim, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you.

The campsite is host to a few farm animals, and lamb feeding time is special, as is having chickens walking around the place totally unfazed by the disruption of campers.

Telford is a very short drive away and worth a look out to - it has all the usual like bowling alley, ice rink, cinema etc, but we were most impressed with the park. If you go, let the kids take their swim stuff too!

Local attractions

As you'll have brought your sturdy boots, stride out into the Shropshire Hills AONB in any direction for green countryside and wildlife haven walks, or drive in the Telford direction for a woodland wander around Wrekin Forest.

Striding around establishments is also a topping option when on holiday in any locale, so check out the craft and antique shops, tearooms and pubs, grocers and butchers of the region's market towns like Ellesmere, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Bishops Castle, Ludlow, Much Wenlock and Bridgnorth.

Set in the centre of Shropshire on the River Severn, the Tudor town of Shrewsbury is also well worth a wander, for more shopping (but of course), Shrewsbury Abbey and Shrewsbury Castle, the museum and art gallery, town centre park and – if you're in town in mid-August – the famed Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Also around in Shropshire and its surrounds are award-winning museums, lushly green gardens, farms and abbeys, historic houses managed by the National Trust and English Heritage, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, about 20 minutes' drive from Ted's at Hunger Hill.

Must see

  • Royal Air Force Museum Cosford (4.7 miles)
  • Boscobel House & the Royal Oak (4.8 miles)
  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (7.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Sunnycroft (7.4 miles)
  • Wightwick Manor and Gardens (10.8 miles)
