Ted's at Hunger Hill: Plenty of room for manoeuvre

General

  • Peaceful and friendly site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Walkers' paradise with many strolls and hikes close by
  • Well-maintained amenities including access for disabled guests

Bring those boots made for walking, for you'll be hungry for the hikes around Shropshire's Ted's at Hunger Hill.

Based in Sheriffhales about four miles from Telford, this peaceful, friendly and popular little site is in land where walks are all around, meandering for miles through the wildlife havens of the green Shropshire countryside.

Ted's is a smallholding, with grass pitches on a gently sloping field set among the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sheep and ducks wander the site – the kids are welcome to say hi or go and meet some of the menagerie at the animal paddock – and free-range eggs and fresh meat are usually available for sale.

Among the well-maintained amenities are disabled-friendly showers and toilets, chemical disposal points and facilities for charging and recycling. There's easy access from the site to Sheriffhales village, just off the main A5.

Toilets and showers clean. Large slightly sloping field so plenty of space. We arrived in the dark and left early in the rain next day so cannot say anything about views etc but it was fine for us and clearly signposted.

Lovely campsite with plenty of space and decent facilities in good working order.

Ted is a true gent and very helpful.

The site faces west so I was treated to a stunning sunset and some great stargazing. There's also a resident peacock who sometimes strolls over to say hello!

There's not much in the nearby village of Sherrifhales, so stock up on supplies in Shifnal or Newport if needed.

    Disliked:

Farmer decided to harvest the adjacent field at 8pm one night and bale up the straw at 7am the following morning - it was a bit noisy! Probably doesn't happen very often though, I must've been unlucky.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, great advice for other visitors and pity you picked the harvesting time but that is country life, but you seemed to accept the life, love Ted

This was our first time ever camping in our trailer tent. The plot was amazing with amazing views and the water and electric right by us. The owner was friendly and very relaxed. We came back Monday and will be returning on Sunday for a further 4 nights as we loved it so much. Toilet and shower block lovely and clean. To say it was just 20 mins from where we live, we could have been miles away. Loved every single second of it here and this will definitely be our go too place. Love it.

Local attractions

As you'll have brought your sturdy boots, stride out into the Shropshire Hills AONB in any direction for green countryside and wildlife haven walks, or drive in the Telford direction for a woodland wander around Wrekin Forest.

Striding around establishments is also a topping option when on holiday in any locale, so check out the craft and antique shops, tearooms and pubs, grocers and butchers of the region's market towns like Ellesmere, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Bishops Castle, Ludlow, Much Wenlock and Bridgnorth.

Set in the centre of Shropshire on the River Severn, the Tudor town of Shrewsbury is also well worth a wander, for more shopping (but of course), Shrewsbury Abbey and Shrewsbury Castle, the museum and art gallery, town centre park and – if you're in town in mid-August – the famed Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Also around in Shropshire and its surrounds are award-winning museums, lushly green gardens, farms and abbeys, historic houses managed by the National Trust and English Heritage, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, about 20 minutes' drive from Ted's at Hunger Hill.

Must see

  • Royal Air Force Museum Cosford (4.6 miles)
  • Boscobel House & the Royal Oak (4.8 miles)
  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (7.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Sunnycroft (7.4 miles)
  • Wightwick Manor and Gardens (10.8 miles)
