  • Telford site within a mile of Ironbridge
  • Campfires allowed using upcycled washing machine drum pits
  • Modern toilet block; logs and barbecue coals delivered to your pitch
If you've ever had a steely determination to visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Ironbridge, this is the very site for you in Irongorge Camping near Telford. As the name might hint, this site is very close indeed to the world famous birthplace of the Industrial Revolution – the exploits of Mr Brunel et al are only a mile away – so forge your way here forthwith for a heritage hol that should be just tickety boo. Active options are around too if that's also your tickety boo thing: you might quite fancy riverside strolls, riverbank fishing, river surface boating and canoeing (there's a pattern developing here...) and, on land, possibly racing around on mountain bikes or hiking up hills or the Severn Gorge. And visiting the many excellent pubs around; peeps on hol should also/always fancy those. Amenities of shower and toilet block and washing-up area are smartly up to date and kept to good standards by owners Claire and James. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site: if you need to buy dry logs or barbecue coals they can most conveniently be delivered to your pitch. And, what might possibly become your fave feature of this industrious little site, the ready made 'fire bowls' are actually cleverly upcycled washing machine drums, which you can fill with fire for your evening stews. Mr Brunel would have approved....

Local attractions

It's a slight porkie to state with firm authority that the Industrial Revolution started exactly at Ironbridge Gorge on one particular day, for of course as your teachers will have told you, it was a gradual process happening all over the shop over a longer period of time. That said, the 10 museums of the Ironbridge site are the definitive Industrial Revolution attraction in the land, visited tirelessly by over half a million people every year. Five of the 10 museums are within a mile of Irongorge Camping, including award-winning Enginuity which should spark the kids' interest right up with its interactive exhibits and hands-on activities; get them to try pulling a locomotive by hand or test their speedy reactions against the Enginuity lighting-fast robot. About 10 minutes' drive from Irongorge Camping will see you back in time at Blists Hill Victorian Town, another Ironbridge Gorge museum and an award-winning ingenuity where visitors can experience life as it was in Victorian times including Victorian shops, cottages and schools. If the kids play up, tell them about Victorian child labour and chimney climbing too... Elsewhere in the area, Irongorge Camping has views over Wrekin Hill with easy access to it for those who fancy a walk, climb or a slack sit at the summit with a picnic, a beer and a book.
