General

  • Within a mile of Ironbridge
  • Campfires allowed using upcycled washing machine drum pits
  • Modern loo block

If you've ever had a steely determination to visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Ironbridge, we have the very site for you in Irongorge Camping near Telford.

As the name might hint, this site is very close indeed to the world famous birthplace of the Industrial Revolution – the exploits of Mr Brunel et al are only a mile away – so forge your way here forthwith for a heritage hol that should be just tickety boo.

Active options are around too if that's also your tickety boo thing: we'd quite fancy riverside strolls, riverbank fishing, river surface boating and canoeing (we see a pattern developing here) and, on land, possibly racing around on mountain bikes or hiking up hills or the Severn Gorge. And visiting the many excellent pubs around; we also/always fancy those.

Amenities of shower and loo block and washing-up area are smartly up to date and kept to good standards by owners Claire and James. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site: if you need to buy dry logs or barbecue coals they can most conveniently be delivered to your pitch.

And, possibly Pitchup.com's fave feature of this industrious little site, the ready made 'fire bowls' are actually cleverly upcycled washing machine drums, which you can fill with fire for your evening stews. We think Mr Brunel would have approved.

Lovely, quiet location. Convenient for visiting the sights of Ironbridge and the Gorge. Welcoming, chatty owner. The pod was superb - the best we'd been in on our bicycle trip from John O'Groats to Lands End.

There's a big list, but the highlights were nice hot showers, a place to keep freezer items, cooking on fire pits and most importantly the owner saved the day when a part of our tent broke when we were putting it up by fashioning a new piece out of left over tent poles. It worked a treat and he saved the day.

    Disliked:

Every time we wanted to go out the kids had disappeared to pet the dogs, play with other kids or play in the playground.

The site is a small one which we liked. The owners were very friendly and helpful. There seem to be 2 fields from what we could see. One very flat with electric pitches and pods and the other on an incline with pitches cut out of the hillside.

We were on the flat field with the electric hook up. It is very child friendly to the point you cannot drive your car to the pitch. Large wheel barrows and trollies are provided to transport your kit and belongings. The small inconvenience means the kids are completely safe running around the field and to the play area. The kids actually loved wheeling the barrows of kit to the car on the day we left resulting in no cries of 'i'm bored', tantrums or fighting whilst packing away!!

it is very close to Iron bridge. I would say it is walking distance but has a very steep hill to walk back up. The Enginuity science museum is half way down the hill. Our children love that museum.

The showers were clean and hot. We had no issues but friends who stayed in cooler weather advised us the building can be a little on the chilly side.

    Disliked:

I felt that 2 sinks to serve a campsite of ladies for washing, teeth cleaning and washing hands after using the loo is not enough. A few more would be helpful. After using the loo I had to queue to wash my hands for a long time as people were washing faces and cleaning teeth in the only sinks.

The outside washing up sinks would benefit from an extra draining board.

Local attractions

It's a slight porkie to state with firm authority that the Industrial Revolution started exactly at Ironbridge Gorge on one particular day, for of course as your teachers will have told you, it was a gradual process happening all over the shop over a longer period of time. That said, the ten museums of the Ironbridge site are the definitive Industrial Revolution attraction in the land, visited tirelessly by over half a million people every year.

Five of the ten museums are within a mile of Irongorge Camping, including award-winning Enginuity which should spark the kids' interest right up with its interactive exhibits and hands-on activities; get them to try pulling a locomotive by hand or test their speedy reactions against the Enginuity lighting-fast robot.

About ten minutes' drive from Irongorge Camping will see you back in time at Blists Hill Victorian Town, another Ironbridge Gorge museum and an award-winning ingenuity where visitors can experience life as it was in Victorian times including Victorian shops, cottages and schools. If the kids play up, tell them about Victorian child labour and chimney climbing too.

Elsewhere in the area, Ironbridge Camping has views over Wrekin Hill with easy access to it for those who fancy a walk, climb or a slack sit at the summit with a picnic, a beer and a book.
