Fishing on site

  • Tiny touring site on a working family farm in rural Shropshire
  • Hardstanding pitches 15 minutes' drive from Church Stretton
  • Carp fishing, farm animals, fresh eggs, country walks and dark skies
If you're looking for a peaceful touring site rather than a large holiday park, The Shepherd's Loft is it, with a tiny number of hardstanding pitches on a working farm in Shropshire with views of Lodge Hill and The Wrekin. It sits in the quiet village of Frodesley, which is not only easy to get to but also splendid for stargazing (it's near the dark skies of the Shropshire Hills). You'll know for sure that you're in the countryside, with fresh eggs for sale at the gate and farm animals on site. Bring a rod to try the half-acre carp pool on site, which is available to use for an additional fee; numbers of anglers are limited to keep it a peaceful experience. Guests here can also look forward to good on-site facilities, including toilets and hot showers, both kept to a high standard for your comfort, as well as a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The hardstanding pitches all have their own electric hook-up and water supply. How else to fill your days? There are walks directly from the site, plus plenty more to explore in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. For culinary treats, you might also like to head to the foodie town of Ludlow (35 minutes). A farm shop is five minutes' drive away, and more shops and supermarkets are in Shrewsbury, 25 minutes' drive away.

What customers say

This small, peaceful campsite offers beautiful countryside views and friendly hosts. Pitches are level and clean, with amenities including a clean toilet and shower. Guests appreciate the quiet atmosphere, countryside walks, and the option to purchase fresh eggs and preserves. The site's rural location may feel isolated to some, and the single toilet/shower facility is frequently mentioned as a potential drawback, especially when busy. Some minor points for improvement include signage at the entrance and hot water at the washing-up area.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review – and for adding us to your favourites! We’re delighted you enjoyed the peace and quiet, the views and, most importantly, had a good night’s sleep.

It sounds as though you received the full Shepherd’s Loft welcome, including a greeting from one of the chickens! They do have a habit of making themselves part of the welcoming committee!

We’re really pleased you found the facilities clean and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. Thank you for recommending us and saying you’d visit again – we’d be very happy to welcome you back for another restful stay in the Shropshire countryside.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and for recommending us to friends. We’re really pleased you enjoyed our peaceful location and would visit us again.

We were sorry to read that you would have liked somewhere to wash up, as we do have a designated outdoor washing-up sink located by the toilet and shower facilities. We’re sorry if this wasn’t obvious during your stay, and we’ll take your comment on board as it may be that we need to make the signage a little clearer.

Thank you again for staying with us, and we hope to welcome you back to The Shepherd’s Loft for another peaceful stay in the future.

The eggs in thr morning were delicious 😋
Liked the walk down the farm (not so sure about the dogs lol)

Nice peaceful basic site.. good value.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review and for recommending us to others! We’re really pleased you enjoyed the peace and quiet of the site, and it was lovely to hear that the fresh eggs went down well too!

We’re glad you enjoyed having a wander down through the farm. We did smile at your comment about the dogs! They can certainly make themselves heard when someone walks past, but they are securely contained in their kennels – they obviously take their role as farm security very seriously!

We’re delighted you found The Shepherd’s Loft peaceful, welcoming and good value. We deliberately keep things fairly simple here, with the countryside, farm and surroundings being a big part of the experience.

Thank you again for staying with us, and we’d love to welcome you back for another peaceful break in the future.

Liked location

Disliked very narrow lanes getting their. a lot of biting flies.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and for recommending us to friends. We’re pleased you enjoyed our location and would consider visiting again.

We appreciate your feedback about the narrow lanes. Being tucked away in the countryside does mean the approach includes some narrow Shropshire lanes, and we always advise guests to follow our directions carefully and take their time.

As for the biting flies, unfortunately that’s one of the less glamorous parts of staying in the countryside, particularly during the warmer months! We’re sorry they were a nuisance during your stay.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you back for another, hopefully more bite-free, visit

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Owners really friendly. Lovely little site with donkeys and chickens to say hello too. Gorgeous views over mountains and nice to have your own tap.

Disliked A little strict on the guest policy. We would have loved to meet up with some friends for a drink or two one evening but you’re not allowed guests past 6pm. And no more than 2 guests in daytime
A little play area would make this place a bit more family friendly

From the manager: Thank you for your thoughtful review. We’re really pleased you enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, beautiful views, and the visits from the donkeys and chickens! It’s also great to hear you appreciated having your own water tap on the pitch.

We do appreciate your feedback regarding the guest policy. As a very small and quiet site, the policy is in place to help maintain the peaceful environment that many guests choose us for, as well as to manage parking and facilities fairly for everyone staying on site. We completely understand your point though, and appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

We really appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back again in the future!

Liked The location, very easy to get to and to find. Like the facilities they had everything that you needed in a peaceful quiet location. You can even have safe fire pits for that added camping experience. The hosts were great and took the trouble to come and meet us on arrival to ensure that everything was right. They even have farm produce for sale including eggs and preserves thought this was a great touch

Disliked Nothing really was a good stay

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Good pitches, clean facilities, great views, friendly and helpful staff, lots of walks nearby. Loved the honesty box for eggs and jams. Some map info for some walks and info about nearby pubs and the local farm shop.

Disliked NOT a dislike, just a point people may need to know.
There is 1 toilet and shower together, so if you are a person who cant wait when you need to go, it would be best to have your own toilet. We only had to wait a couple of times and the site was quite full, we had our own toilet and didn't need to use it.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely and detailed review, and for recommending us to friends—we really appreciate it!

We’re delighted you enjoyed the pitches, views, nearby walks, and the peaceful atmosphere of the site. It’s great to hear the information on local walks, pubs, and the farm shop was useful during your stay. We’re also so pleased you loved the honesty box for the eggs and jams—those little touches are something we really enjoy offering our guests.

Thank you as well for mentioning the bathroom setup in such a fair and helpful way for future visitors. As a small site we do keep the facilities simple, but we’re pleased to say we have now laid the concrete base for an additional toilet, which we hope to have installed by the end of June. We’re always looking at ways to improve the experience for our guests while keeping the quiet, relaxed feel of the site.

We truly appreciate your feedback and would love to welcome you back again for another countryside getaway soon!

We’re also really pleased you found the facilities clean and enjoyed the site so much. As for the spider… living in the countryside means they occasionally like to make themselves at home too! 🤣 We hope he didn’t disturb your shower too much.

Thanks again for your kind words, and we’d love to welcome you back again soon!

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up on the local footpaths, set off for longer strolls in the Shropshire Hills, perhaps starting from the walkers’ mecca Church Stretton (15 minutes’ drive) at the foot of the Long Mynd. Caer Caradoc (10 minutes) and the Wrekin (half an hour) are close by if you’d rather tackle a mountain or two. Quad biking, horse riding and River Severn canoe trips are all possible too if you don’t mind a drive of 45 minutes or so. For a bit of local history, start with Acton Burnell Castle (five minutes), the seat of the first Parliament in 1283, then move on to Wroxeter (15 minutes) to explore the Roman City and then take a tour and tasting at the vineyard next door. You could also embark on a Charles Darwin-themed tour of Shrewsbury (25 minutes). Ironbridge (25 minutes) is another fine place for a glimpse into the past, as is the lovely National Trust estate Attingham Park (20 minutes). Or try the Telford Steam Railway (25 minutes) for a special day out.
