  • Quiet rural site in a dark skies area next to the Shropshire Hills
  • Wroxeter Roman City 20 minutes' drive; walks directly from the site
  • Spacious pitches and spectacular views; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Are you keen to see the stars? When the conditions are clear, your chances are spectacularly high at Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp, set within a dark skies area on the edge of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Not only that, but during the daytime there are stunning views over the hills; keep your eyes peeled and you might just see buzzards or red kites flying overhead This peaceful site has brought in eco initiatives including open field management (to attract birds of prey), a solar installation (to provide all electrical supplies) and additional features including eco-friendly mowers and recycling facilities. Guests numbers are also kept low to allow for more spacious pitches and privacy for everyone, and to keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe. Don't forget your walking boots here; there are lots of walks beginning directly from the field. If you’re keen to take a picnic along on your walk, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car). A modern woodfired pizza oven is in the central area of the site for guests to use, as is a communal sheltered picnic pod with a TV and phone charging facilities. There's also a communal firepit and a central fire-safe area (for barbecues and personal firepits, subject to inspection for safety reasons). Amenities are fairly simple at this site: drinking water taps and blocks with proper flushing toilets, showers and hot hand-washing facilities, plus separate grey and black water disposal points. Several traditional pubs serving fine food are within 15 minutes' drive of the site, and Shrewsbury is only 35 minutes away for bigger evenings out.

Liked Owners were so lovely and very understanding about a mistake I made on the booking! The site is beautiful with great facilities, perfect for a quiet getaway. Thank you so much!

From the manager: I know you gave a 9/10 overall but we are disappointed with value for money (free showers, wifi, lots of extras including fridge freezer, and location, 8/10 , when you refer to a beautiful site etc. Also WIFI 4 which is free and works so well all over our site. We really don't understand your review and were always here to help with any thing you needed.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (backpacker, small)

Liked Beautiful site with panoramic views of the shropshire hills.

Toilet facilities were closer to glamping than camping. It was so refreshing having such a lovely and well-designed shower/toilet block whilst being away from home.

Fresh free range eggs available on site!

Extremely accommodating and friendly campsite hosts with a communal fire pit available to use on site (we didn’t use it as the winds were too strong!)

Incredibly clean, and we appreciated the cars being parked separately from the camping field. It was lovely seeing other little campers able to run around and play in the safety of the field.

The views and overall peacefulness of the site was unmatched. We had the best time!

Disliked Absolutely nothing. This was our best camping trip by far, and will continue to recommend to family and friends.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (backpacker, small)

Liked Nice and well spaced out. Small site without crowds. Toilets and showers very good and well kept. Unloading directly from car.

Disliked Not able to park alongside tent. Loud bloke standing by the firepit telling people he's going to Denmark on Monday for work (4 times in about an hour!)
My wife didn't like being badged "middle aged couple" to fill in this form 😲

From the manager: We are disappointed with your score as we always strive to give our guests a 10 experience. We seem to have been marked down by things not of our making.

As you correctly state, we are a small uncrowded site. We space tents away from campervans so that everyone has space to relax and for children to play safely without moving cars.

It is specifically referred to in the booking conditions that cars are not allowed after unpacking as this provides the space and safety aspect.

We cannot be blamed for another guest who may have annoyed you by enjoying himself.

Nor can we be blamed for you being "labelled" by Pitchup into an age bracket.
We do not like being labelled pensioners, but truth is, we are of that age bracket.

From the manager: Thank you for your review.
The pod seems to be a great success, especially for tents. It was very useful on Sunday as tents were being packed away and children could sit and play whilst it rained.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (backpacker, small)

Liked Incredibly secluded campsite on the doorstep of the Shropshire Hills AONB, we through-hiked the area and couldn't have stumbled upon a more picturesque view and beautiful, fully off-grid site. The fact that all electrical systems are powered by solar was such welcome information, and the facilities were great. Pleased we made the stop, and will be sure to frequent the campsite again.

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though). Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash. To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
