It’s not everyone who can say they’ve camped on a 3,000-year-old site… but if you book in at Ebury Hill Camping and Caravanning Club Site in the Shropshire countryside, you can add yourself to the short list of people who have. Why? Because you’ll be sleeping on a little piece of English history: many millennia ago, the whole area was an Iron Age hill fort. This rural site is 15 minutes’ drive from historic Shrewsbury and all its dining options. It’s managed by the Camping and Caravanning Club, with both members and non-members welcome. Members benefit from a reduced rate, so please be sure to select the correct membership option when booking your stay. As always with all Club sites, Ebury Hill has an abundance of well-kept facilities and services. As noted for its abundance of local wildlife as its history, the site is split over two levels, with tree-lined pitches and a coarse-fishing lake well-stocked with carp, perch, roach and tench. Other handy facilities to keep the whole family happy (and any accompanying four-legged friends, of course) include a designated dog walk, a play area, motorhome service point and dishwashing facilities. However, the ancient origins of this site means there are no toilets and showers, so you will need suitable facilities in your unit.

What customers say

This is a quiet and peaceful adult site with spacious pitches and lovely views. Staff are frequently praised for being friendly and helpful. Some guests experienced poor Wi-Fi. It's advised not to rely on GPS for directions, as it can be inaccurate. Note that the site does not have a toilet block, which some visitors felt made it slightly overpriced, though this did not deter them from returning. Guests recommend bringing a sledgehammer for pegs due to roots.

Local attractions

One of the biggest attractions close to Ebury Hill is UNESCO-listed Ironbridge (25 minutes’ drive). This spectacular gorge and the iconic bridge that straddles the River Severn were epicentre of the Industrial Revolution and are also home to several museums like Blists Hill Victorian Town, bringing Victorian Britain back to life in a living, open-air museum. There’s more Shropshire heritage on offer at Haughmond Abbey (five minutes), where you can explore the medieval ruins of the refectory and cloisters. However, if you have kids with you, they’ll probably thank you for swerving more history and treating them to a day of raptor displays and bird handling at Battlefield Bird of Prey Centre (10 minutes). For hikers, the stunning Shropshire Hills National Landscape lies 25 minutes’ drive to the south, with notorious peaks like The Stiperstones (40 minutes) and Brown Clee Hill (50 minutes) waiting to be conquered. Another stroll through woodland and over crags leads to the Hawkstone Park Follies (20 minutes), an area of gardens, ornamental bridges and grottos created in the 18th century and now restored to their original condition.
