General

  • Peaceful and secluded site with spectacular views
  • In a wildlife haven: listen for owls at night
  • New amenities block including a shower for disabled guests

Your little bears might not want to leave. Big Bear Lodge is a Shrewsbury site with what the owners reckon just might be among the best views in Shropshire – and it's in a spectacularly secluded countryside location where your young can run around and go spotting badgers, foxes, bats, squirrels and even the resident cuckoo that arrives each May.

A flock of feathered visitors also flit around this calmly quiet site, including red kites, woodpeckers, swifts, buzzards and even some tame robins – we spy photo opps. You'll hear the local owls hooting at night, and if it's a cloud-free evening you can settle down under the skies for a spot of peaceful stargazing: no light pollution or traffic noise here.

The Big Bear facilities include fresh water adjacent to pitches, a new amenities block with three showers including one for disabled guests, heated towel rails, rainfall shower heads and washing-up facilities with hot and cold water. Dogs are welcome on site but must be kept on leads.

Big Bear Lodge is also near where the Vyrnwy and Severn rivers meet so has a wealth of walks very close by – and Shropshire has over 3500 miles' worth of hikes if you want to take things a bit further. We reckon we we'd roar with pleasure...

Lovely site, shame about the people 21/07/2017

Fantastic location, really friendly welcome and comprehensive information provided

    Disliked:

The noise. Until 9pm it was caused by the owners having a party just over the hedge from our tent but they kindly moved when I asked them to let my daughter get to sleep. Then until after midnight it was the inconsiderate sods sat outside the adjoining tent working their way through a small off licence. Moral of the story - curfews are good things. Even 11pm would've been nice

From the manager...

Firstly I am glad you liked the location and the information we provided.

I would like to point out that you emailed me and your wife phoned me to request a pitch under a tree for your daughter and that was the only pitch that we thought you would like.
We were not having a party we actually had a few friends staying in the pods and they came over to the cottage for a BBQ and we were there for 2 hours you very rudely asked us to be quiet and we moved straight away.
We walked around at 11pm and we didn't hear any noise but at any point you could have come to the cottage or phoned us and we would have walked around again.
We do ask people to keep it quiet after 11pmand the tents you were talking about had small children inside so I doubt they were that noisy.
I wish you had of told us of your issues but it is very hard when you are only staying for one night to fully appreciate camping. I realise it was your first ever trip and hopefully you will give it another go, but it is quite common for groups to sit out with a drink enjoying the weather when camping.

Had a fabulous time and will definitely be returning, the hosts were very helpful and accommodating, the pod was lovely and comfortable. Shower block was clean although the hand towels could have done with renewing or changing more regularly.

From the manager...

Hi, thanks for all the positive feedback. I clean the showers blocks once a day and check them and re fill toilet rolls and empty bins twice and inhigh seasons three times a day. The hand towels get changed twice a week on Friday and Sundays. It just depends who we have on site as to how clean the facilities are kept between my visits. I hadn't noticed they were dirty if I had I can assure you I would have changed them anything like that please inform us at the time and we will obviously do something about it. You only have to ask or bring it to our attention and we will sort it out straight away. Hope to see you back again soon. Cassie

Chilled spot, good flat clean area with good safe walks would return 12/07/2017

  • Electric hardstanding touring pitch

  • Liked:

We booked as there is the opportunity to book pitches and glamping that is the main reason that we booked here along with all of the facilities. Close proximity of the amenities block water to top up and recycle area. Quiet local roads for walking. Hassle free check in and good pre arrival service.

    Disliked:

The size of the vehicle pitch was ample however the grass to pitch up our awning was patchy and very hard as in stones and patchy, we could not get a wind breaker into the ground. We would return though. The dog nearby barking!!..washing up area perhaps needs a draining area as nowhere to place clean dishes.

Family shower room needs some TLC but apart from that everything was great.

From the manager...

Hi, glad you enjoyed your stay and made use of all the great activities and places to visit locally.
Thank you for your feedback about the family/disabled shower room. I presume you mean the paint behind the towel radiator, it is the next job we plan to do, I actually have the paint ready to go. We try to keep on top of all the re painting that needs doing after heavy use every year, however with a toddler in toe everyday this has proved more difficult than I imagined, hence the delay in the family shower room. I am hoping to have all the toilets done within the next two weeks. Well fingers crossed. Cassie.

I am a single parent (there wasn't a category for that) I brought my 2 children 13 & 8 and we had an easy, comfortable and fun stay. Fun for all 3 of us. The huts were warm & there was plenty of room for the 3 of us. The facilities were spotless and modern. We loved it & will be back.

Hi, there should be a category for single parents. It's nice to know you felt comftable at our site, it can be very hard travelling on your own with children. I have been there and done that and some places make you feel very isolated so I am really glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you back soon.

Local attractions

This part of England running into Powys and Wales has been popular for yonks with outdoor and active sorts, who come to canoe or fish its waters, canter around the countryside by horseback or foot, climb or mountain bike its peaks, or tackle less trodden options like clay shooting or paragliding. Golf is available locally too.

If you're more into sightseeing than activity, Powys Castle, Erddig Hall, Chirk Castle and the Hawkstone Follies are all good local options, or you could have a day out in Shrewsbury to stroll through its shuts and over its nine bridges.

And as for those miles and miles of Shropshire – and Powys – walks? Try a wander around Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall just over the Welsh border, among the wildlife and birds of Lake Vyrnwy, up and down the three peaks of the Breidden Hills, and through Nesscliffe Hill Country Park between Oswestry and Shrewsbury – with a pitstop at fifteenth century pub the Old Three Pigeons Inn.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (9.6 miles)
  • Much Wenlock Priory (21.3 miles)
  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (22.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Chirk Castle (13.3 miles)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (14.2 miles)
