Walnut Cottage Caravan Park: Site

General

  • Family-run smallholding site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Spectacular views over Wenlock Edge and surrounded by walking trails
  • Play park with swings, climbing frame, trampoline and toddlers' area

At Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, a peaceful family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, finding the dream getaway doesn’t have to be a tough nut to crack.

Nine miles from Wenlock Edge and the meadows and woodlands of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Walnut Cottage is a paradise for ramblers and adventurers. Heaps of walking routes, cycling routes and riding trails – many of which are part of the Shropshire Way circular – crisscross the area, so pull on those walking boots, don your bike helmet or climb into the saddle and explore.

For the little legs struggling to keep up, a play park back on site will buoy moods – let the kids burn off some energy on the swings, climbing frame and trampoline (or in the toddlers' area if they're still mini).

Feeling peckish? Fire up the barbecue and pile it high with supplies from the convenience store in Much Wenlock, then tuck in by the campfire. Friendly dogs are welcome on site, so don’t forget to toss Rex a bone – just make sure he’s leashed first.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Only 110-volt heaters are allowed on site.

Electricity is metered on site at £0.19 per kWh and must be paid at check-out.

Tranquil rural setting. The shower and toilet blocks were exceptionally clean and well maintained. The site owner welcomed us and was very down to earth and friendly.
Secured gated site. Some pitches are not level, but not a real problem if you have leveling ramps.
We arrived on a Saturday and site owner Wayne offered to order and collect a takeaway, great extra service.

Really friendly owner and well laid out secure site with generous hardstanding pitches. Excellent new toilet/shower block with full laundry facilities and well maintained including the Elsan + grey water area.
Rural location but great for star gazing and walks, situated close to AONB with local shops a short drive away and children's play area on site.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the owner made us feel very welcome, overall it was great value for money and has joined our short list of sited we will visit again, we would highly recommend Walnut Cottage Caravan park to anyone.

Local attractions

This part of Shropshire is brimming over with history. Start with an exploration of the ruins and reconstructions at the Wroxeter Roman city, Viriconium, 15 minutes’ drive from Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, then jump forward a thousand years or so for something more recent: at the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Ironbridge Gorge, 20 minutes away, wander through Blists Hill Victorian Town, learn about the history of iron in the Coalbrookdale Museum and cross the first cast-iron bridge in the world.

There are plenty of stately homes and (formerly) impregnable fortresses nearby: the 13th-century Stokesay Castle is 30 minutes from Walnut Cottage, and the spectacular Attingham Park, Wilderhope Manor and Benthall Hall are all within 20 minutes of the site.

The local towns are no slouches either: Church Stretton, the only town within the Shropshire Hills AONB, dates back to Norman times; Much Wenlock is home to a precursor to the modern Olympic Games, and the Wenlock Olympian Games are still held every year; and Shrewsbury was the birthplace of the Origin of Species’ Charles Darwin.

For a break from history, hire a raft for a tour at Ironbridge Gorge, take to the slopes at the snowboarding and skiing centre in Telford, or get muddy at Severn Valley Quad Trekking, all within 35 minutes of Walnut Cottage.

Must see

  • Much Wenlock Priory (4.1 miles)
  • Enginuity (7.5 miles)
  • Ironbridge Gorge Museums (7.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Wilderhope Manor (3.5 miles)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (6.3 miles)
