General

  • Dog-friendly grassy pitches just outside of the Shropshire Hills
  • A five-minute drive to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre
  • A 10-minute walk to a village pub and shop; fridge and freezer on site

Nipping to the Shropshire Hills to go hiking in the hills and mountain biking through thick woodlands? Kevindale Campsite is peaceful site half a mile from the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a nifty base for such outdoorsy breaks. Train spotters, gather around too, as the site overlooks the Heart of Wales Line and folks staying here can spot trains trundling by.

The large grassy pitches are three miles from Craven Arms, where the The Heart of Wales Line begins its journey to Llanelli and the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (five minutes’ drive) has 30 acres of riverside meadows, a museum and an Iron Age hillfort. The market town also has Mickey Millers Family Playbarn for any families looking for quick and easy amusements.

There are plenty of places for a frothy coffee, a takeaway, pub grub or snacks in Craven Arms, but if your stomach’s growling urgently, just take yourself off to the village shop and pub, which are 10 minutes’ walk away from the site in Aston on Clun.

Any frozen or fresh goods can be stowed away in the fridge and freezer provided at Kevindale Campsite – just pick them back out when you’re ready to rustle up a barbecue or firepit. There’s a washing-up area for you to scrub everything up afterwards and men’s and women’s showers and toilets whenever you fancy freshening up yourself.

You’ll also be able to take your dog off to Shropshire's woods, hills, forests and valleys while you’re here, as the site welcomes canine guests too.

We absolutely loved our stay, the couple who run it are very friendly and informative.
I loved the fact they had a fridge for us to use, so no warm food, this made me very happy!
The toilets and showers are clean and spacious.
The area in the woods for the children to play in was a hit.
We are 100% going to be back next yr!

Brilliant camp site, was amazingly clean seemed every time I went in there was topped up loo roll and soup. There was sheep in the next field which entertained my toddle but apart from that it was just simply a lovely place to stay for the night. If your just looking for an clean easy stay and with no bells and whistles it's great!!

    Disliked:

This is not a dislike of the campsite at all. but It's worth knowing.
Book in advance the local pubs, the couple we tried had bookings only. But the fish and chip shop is highly recommend.

From the manager...

Thankyou for the lovely review! Hopefully see you again.

Inconsiderate campers who got up at 5am, slamming camper van doors, talking loudly and starting motor bikes up.

This is a lovely quiet and spacious campsite. Large toilet/shower block which was very clean with separate ladies and gents facilities. Washing up area. Fresh eggs available on site. All pitches were flat. There are lots of public footpaths and the Shropshire Way runs nearby. Local pub which has a lovely beer garden and community shop for basic food items. Train station available at Broome for travel to Shrewsbury or Wales. Craven Arms has a good supermarket and a great charity bookshop. I will definitely be back.

Local attractions

The first question on your mind might be: where to go walking first? And there sure is a lot of choice, with all the trails around the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (25 minutes' drive), including a stream for cooling off and wild ponies wandering around.

Mortimer Forest (20 minutes) has a thousand hectares worth of wildlife, including birds of prey and warblers, and Bucknell Wood (20 minutes) has plenty more, such as grass snakes and slow worms.

As for those who’d like to take in the scenery with the wind rushing through their hair and two wheels beneath their feet, Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd and Hopton Woods (10 minutes) both have mountain biking tracks.

Mighty fortresses may also play a part in your itinerary, given that the Hopton Castle (10 minutes) ruins, Clun Castle (15 minutes) and Ludlow Castle (20 minutes) are all so close by. While you’re in Ludlow (20 minutes), scout out if any food festivals or markets are on the schedule.

Must see

  • Stokesay Castle (2.2 miles)
  • Ludlow Castle (7.9 miles)
  • Much Wenlock Priory (18.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills (8.7 miles)
  • Croft Castle and Parkland (10.2 miles)
