Quiet wild meadow

  • Simple pop-up Cotswolds site in the town of Charlbury
  • Within 10 minutes' walk of a 15-minute bus to Diddly Squat Farm Shop
  • Choice of pubs 10 minutes' walk; railway station five minutes' drive
Whether you’re heading to the Cotswolds for early August’s Wilderness Festival at Cornbury Park, the almost-endless walking options or simply a peaceful weekend escape, Charlbury Rise Camping, edging the pretty market town of Charlbury, covers all bases. There’s no fuss – just back-to-basics camping in the middle of lots of Cotswolds action, with the welcome addition of easy parking and rail access too. Bear in mind that this is off-grid camping with simple facilities: grass pitches, portable loos and fresh water. There is an open, outdoor shower with cold water and no privacy screen, so remember to bring along your swimwear. Starry skies on clear nights and open space to unwind are added bonuses, but please note there is no electricity. Pitch up in the meadow set on a gentle rise, surrounded by ancient hedgerows and farmland, and you’ll wake up to birdsong, the sound of church bells in the distance and views over the rooftops of one of the Cotswolds’ most attractive market towns. From your pitch, wander into Charlbury (10 minutes’ walk) for supplies or a pint at one of the village pubs, discover re-wilding woodland on strolls through Wychwood Forest, or take the short drive to Chipping Norton (15 minutes’ drive) and a certain very well-known farm shop. (Diddly Squat Farm Shop is also accessible with a 15-minute bus ride from the stop 10 minutes' walk away from the site).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked campsite was within walking distance of local supermarket yet still quiet and rural setting
you were free to pitch up where you liked

Disliked unsupervised so campers rocked up at 1am and played music until 3 am
the mobile chemical toilet flushing mechanism was not working ( I will leave the reader to fill in the blanks there}
The solar powered shower was above the water tap in the open so you had to shower in the open in full view and while you were advised to bring a costume for this purpose showering with or without clothes is too intimate a proceedure to do in full view of everyone I have been on other campsites with solar powered showers but they had a screen.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked The view was lovely if you pitch your tent facing away from the houses.
Close to the village, walking distance to the shop.
Good directions how to find the field and information on local walks.
If you like a minimalist site this is for you, we found it amazing as it’s something we love.
Not many people there due to this which made it peaceful.

Disliked Just the houses that are right beside the field but if you look non of them really have windows on that side of the house so not a massive issue.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked Good location, easy to find, the owner was easily contactable and the campsite was quiet.

Disliked The listing says the campsite has a shower and whilst it does, the shower is in the middle of the camping field. It has no cover and no privacy so unless you bring a swimming costume/trunks it really wouldn’t be practical to shower here.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked The communication was great and Fabia was responsive, and really friendly and polite.

Great phone reception.

Disliked Unfortunately, it didn't feel like the site was as depicted and described on the website. What was missing from the website was the fact that one side of the field where you pitch your tent is lined with houses, so you feel overlooked (Luckily for us, the field was nearly empty when we arrived so we were able to find a spot farthest and facing away from the houses, so it wasn't too bad). Not really what I imagined when it was described on the website as "off-grid". It's in a town, next to a housing estate. From the site, we could hear the sound of traffic and occasionally the sirens of emergency vehicles.

Secondly, I'm not sure what the issue was but the water from the tap tasted strongly of some chemical and as such was undrinkable in our view - so we went to the local supermarket and bought 5l bottles of water to drink instead.

Finally, it should also be noted that the shower really is just a pipe with a shower head on it in the middle of the field, with no covering whatsoever - so can be seen by other campers and also can be seen from the surrounding houses. So bring a swimming costume or something to shower in if you're bothered by that kind of stuff.

Good site but quite expensive for the level of facilities.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked Loved the peace, space and views.
Nice easy site
Close to the pretty village. 5-10 min walk to the shops and pubs.
Had a great weekend, thanks.

Disliked More of a note than a bad review.

The portaloo was okay but I really do think a second one is required as by Sunday you could tell it was rather full.

It says on the booking that there is an outside shower. We are used to outside showers but they usually offer a little privacy. A warning to others, it is a shower in the camping field which can been seen by other campers and houses. We made it work for the weekend but had we have known we would have been more prepared with swimwear.

Local attractions

As well as attending gigs at the Wilderness Festival from your pitch (half an hour’s walk), a stay at Charlbury Rise Camping puts you in pole position for exploring the Cotswolds National Landscape. Historic Burford (20 minutes’ drive), with its combination of mellow-stone cottages and half-timbered houses, is popular for its antiques shops, while Stow-on-the-Wold (half an hour) centres on a vast market square surrounded by a labyrinth of lanes packed with indie boutiques and eateries. See how the other half once lived with a look around the Palladian mansion at Ditchley Park (10 minutes, guided tours by appointment only). Alternatively, spend the day discovering manicured gardens, strolling vast tracts of woodland and touring numerous historical displays at humongous and lavish Blenheim Palace (15 minutes), the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Those of you with a taste for the finer things in life have your pick of Michelin-starred Cotswold restaurants, gourmet pubs and a store filled with organic produce at Daylesford (25 minutes). And let’s not forget the (almost) obligatory visit to Diddly Squat Farm Shop (15 minutes), owned by Jeremy Clarkson – perhaps the UK’s most controversial farmer.
