Liked: Rural location. Great views.

Disliked: Porta loos and no hot water

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Absolutely we make sure to be as honest, transparent and up front about being a back to basics site and the fact we only have cold water and portaloos, as we appreciate they aren't for everyone.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Big flat site, lots of space and lovely views

Disliked: Not exactly a dislike, as it is clearly states on the website the showers are cold, but given the British weather it would be good to have hot water showers.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: So glad you enjoyed your stay! Providing reliable hot water on a completely off grid site with no electricity is massively challenging. There are gas systems, but these aren't 100% reliable, and they're prone to running out of hot water very quickly. The risk would be that we advertise hot water, when it isn't reliably hot. If there's anything worse than no hot water its expecting the water to be hot and it being cold. You have our word that if we can work out a way to affordably and reliably offer hot water, we will. But this is certainly a challenge with no electricity. In the mean time we are as honest and transparent in advertising the facilities as they are.

Liked: Great location, not far from London, lots of space, great view. Loved that you could have a fire.

Disliked: I would prefer compost toilets, from my experience they are less smelly and more eco friendly

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay on site! Unfortunately compost toilets are not suitable for campsites as large as ours, we have anywhere from 50-400 people on site each weekend, this is simply too many people for composting toilets to be able to cope with. They are only suitable for much smaller sites with much lower numbers. from experience with neighbouring campsites composting toilets can also smell (much worse) when subjected to the footfall we have on site. Whilst we appreciate compost toilets may seem nicer they are more suited to glampsites with much smaller volumes of people on site. Compost toilets also take a huge amount of work in terms of actively handling and recycling human waste, especially when factoring for the numbers of people on site. They simply aren't a possibility for our site I'm afraid.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
