  • Secluded riverside site on a farm 20 minutes' drive from Oxford
  • Wild swimming in the river; Chiltern Hills 15 minutes' drive
  • Firepit area and farm shop on site
Wild swimming in Oxfordshire… what a clever notion. D'Oyleys Farm is an excellent option if you’re visiting Oxford and want a bit of adventure along the way: this laidback place has a riverside setting, a wild camping vibe and the means for outdoor cooking and picnics at its lush little island. The farm is in a secluded setting by the Thames, with pitch numbers carefully managed so that guests have loads of room and plenty of peace. There are four access points where you can plunge into the river for a spot of wild swimming – it's a little muddy in places (getting in and out is all about the sit and slide…) but it's fab for cooling off. A highlight of the site is the little island, where the D'Oyleys Farm team has set up the ‘BBQ shack' with cooking facilities, woodburning stove, deck space and a campfire area, where you can sizzle up supper on the woodfired cooking stove. At the camping reception, there's also a large fridge for guests to use. And another, also excellent, highlight? D'Oyleys is home to a farm shop and prepares breakfast packs (bacon, sausages and eggs) and barbecue packs (lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, steaks and burgers) for guests, all home-produced and all easily sorted by ordering before you arrive – use the details in your booking confirmation email. When (if) you crave a bit of city life, Oxford is half an hour away by bus via the service running from the village 15 minutes’ stroll away, or about 20 minutes by car. The farm is four miles from Junction 7 of the M40, so it’s easy to get out and about from here by car too. The local pubs (dog- and welly-friendly) are between 20 and 40 minutes' walk away along footpaths, depending on which one you go to; information on the routes is at the camping reception.

What customers say

D'Oyleys Farm offers a peaceful, "wild" camping experience with exceptionally spacious pitches and a strong connection to nature. Guests frequently praise the quiet atmosphere, abundant wildlife, and excellent opportunities for river swimming. While facilities are basic, they are generally clean and functional. The site's rural setting near Oxford is also a highlight. Some guests note the distance to toilets and showers, while a few mention issues with shower water temperature, though the manager has addressed these.

Freedom non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Excellent campsite, so spacious and peaceful! Stayed for only 4 nights but would of happily have stayed longer. You can leave the car and enjoy walks plentiful from the site. 15 - 20 minutes walk to local village for bus to Oxford. Back to basics and peaceful. Lovely area at the river side with hammocks, you can paddle / swim in the river. Take canoes or hire from the site. Fridge for campers use.
Would highly recommend if you like back to basics site with lots of space. We will return :)

Disliked No general waste or recycle options only food waste.
Not a problem for us as we took ours home but if large family/ long stay may be different.

Freedom non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful setting
Secluded and private pitches
Swimming in multiple places in the river
Easy access to Oxford by bus
Shops and pubs in walking distance but still rural country quiet setting.
All amenities we needed.

Disliked Long walk to the toilet
Showers hot and cold. But these are really minor points overall. As the campsite was one of the nicest I’ve stayed in.

Freedom non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I really liked the location... beautiful, expansive fields, so much room between pitches, the river running through the campsite (swimming and playing in it), the farm shop, the relaxed, friendly environment, the proximity to walks, pubs and the bus to Oxford. It was the perfect place for a proper holiday. Also completely affordable. Loved the no-frills, simple camping experience that D'Oyleys provided so perfectly. Better than I could have imagined.

Disliked Occasional shower glitches.

Freedom non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lots of space between pitches, loads of room for the dog to roam, not too far from Oxford for a bit of sightseeing, river was great for cooling off on a really warm couple of days.

Disliked Showers didn’t all lock and weren’t entirely private (large gap around the door). I appreciate we were prewarned about the lack of bins but it would be a big improvement if some were provided.

Liked Very peaceful site with basic amenities perfect for an off grid site set up.
Great to have privacy by the pitches being spaced out. Easy self service check in with lots of info for the site and surrounding areas. Amazing river side spot and walk from site.

Local attractions

Oxford might be your first stop: take the 20-minute drive or 30-minute bus ride to the city centre for wanders around the university buildings and museums, potters around the market, and, for Tolkien fans, a reverent pint in his fave pub The Eagle and Child. The farm is between the Cotswolds and Chiltern Hills National Landscapes for hikes and scenic strolls in either direction; wanderers could also venture off to Stratford-upon-Avon (an hour and five minutes' drive) for book-themed activities or Royal Leamington Spa (an hour and five minutes). Staying close to home, a footpath leads directly from the site to local villages. There are a few National Trust sites around too, like Watlington Hill (20 minutes), Greys Court (35 minutes) and Nuffield Place (20 minutes), which are all in the Chiltern Hills National Landscape.
