Riverside views with plenty of nature

  • Quiet riverside pitches at a Nottinghamshire country pub
  • Lincoln, Southwell and Sherwood Forest all half an hour's drive
  • Kids and dogs welcome; home-cooked meals available in the pub
A quiet riverside spot… views across fields… lots of wildlife around… and walks, watersports and cycling just outside… well, it doesn’t get much better than that for a chilled-out camping spot, does it? Actually, perhaps it does – because when you stay at The Brownlow Arms, you’ll also have the added bonus of having a pub right next to your pitch too. And that means easy access to a drink and a meal at the end of your day out – with no need to drive back to your accommodation afterwards (good news when there’s a range of real ales to try out, perhaps…). It’s a very welcoming setup at this Nottinghamshire location, with both dogs and kids welcome, and a play area provided for the latter (handily within eyesight of the pitches so the kids can have a bit of independence while parents supervise from afar). The pub is open throughout the week for drinks, with home-cooked meals also available from Thursday to Sunday. The site itself has been nicely set up with a clutch of useful facilities including toilets, showers (both including accessible options), a chemical disposal point and wifi. Campfires and barbecues are permitted, with supplies available at the shops in Sutton on Trent and Tuxford, both within 10 minutes’ drive.

What customers say

This picturesque and friendly site offers fabulous food and a lovely atmosphere in its pub, with spacious pitches and a scenic, quiet location. Recent renovations to facilities are underway, with upgrades noted by visitors. Some guests experienced issues with the grounds being very wet and muddy, particularly affecting parking and vehicle access, and experienced problems with electrics and toilet facilities. The management acknowledges these challenges and is working to address them.

Has potential

Disliked We stayed over May bank holiday was very busy and we think over booked you could touch the next unit, was only arm’s length away. Didn’t feel safe due to fire risks. Lots of noise with many pitches having extra guests. The pub very busy and rowdy . Men’s toilet block very in need of refurb, ladies ok recently renovated however shower was either scolding or freezing. Only one water tap on site
Overall felt a very rowdy site (sorry we don’t like all the fbombs round kids - not the sites fault) maybe it was just because of the bank holiday.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked All the staff were fantastic, the pub is very welcoming and has games, and live music as well as good cheap beer. The site is well maintained, toilets are as clean as any other campsite.

Disliked This site backs onto another caravan site, the residents on that site were very noisy until 0300-0400 both nights I was there, playing loud music and partying, made it difficult to enjoy my stay. There was also a lot of cars with loud exhausts that appeared to visit the pub and then race up the exit road.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Quiet before bank holiday weekend and then got quite busy, but really nice friendly vibe. The pub organised live music for three days, which was lovely. I loved the location, right next to the river, absolutely beautiful. Dogs are welcome and LOTS of space to walk and run. The camping is fairly basic but got everything you might need. Every staff member was absolutely brilliant and kind - Karen (I think she’s the owner) was absolutely amazing

Disliked No/limited connection, which was difficult for us because we work from the van but the staff was lovely and helped as much as possible.

The whole place is undergoing constructions so was woken up multiple days at 7/8am by a jackhammer but we lived with it.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Had a one-night stay at the Brownlow Arms. It's a lovely traditional pub serving good beer and good food. The camp site itself offers nice level pitches. There's a play area for the children and dogs are very welcome on site and inside the pub. There was live entertainment on the Saturday night I stayed. The atmosphere was also nice and welcoming. It can get busy but the staff all work hard to make sure that you don't have to wait too long to get served. Top tip, if you want food, book a table on arrival, we managed to get the last slot for our evening there, the food itself was great!

Disliked Toilets and showers could do with improvement and in fairness it looks like work in that area is ongoing.

Local attractions

Working up a thirst for your evening pint(s) shouldn’t be an issue around here, as it’s very easy to get out for a riverside walk or a bike ride on one of the nearby dedicated cycle paths. Something a bit different? Take a short walk to Marnham Boat Club to organise watersports including water-skiing. For local outings, head to the sobering but important National Holocaust Centre and Museum (15 minutes’ drive) or stop in Tuxford (10 minutes) for the Walks Of Life Museum and Museum of the Horse. A little further away, you may like to visit Southwell (half an hour) for the minster and National Trust - The Workhouse, or Newark-on-Trent (20 minutes) for its National Civil War Centre, air museum and castle. Continue the fresh-air activities with time at RSPB Langford Lowfields (20 minutes) or Sherwood Forest (half an hour), or opt for more city time with a day in Lincoln (half an hour), looking out for its castle, cathedral and bishops’ palace. National Trust members? Check out Clumber Park (20 minutes) and Hardwick Hall (50 minutes).
