  • Wild meadow camping on a working farm with rural views near Retford
  • Five minutes’ drive to Sundown Adventureland, Clumber Park 30 minutes
  • Back-to-basics pop-up site within walking distance of a pub
For sheer simplicity and gorgeous rural views, it would be hard to beat Hermitage Field Camping. Frills there are none – but this tiny pop-up site offers wild camping in a lush wildflower meadow and the chance to enjoy colourful sunsets on clear days. Thanks to its setting on a small working farm near Retford in Nottinghamshire, you’ll also get to watch Hebridean sheep grazing in neighbouring fields. Bring your (well-behaved, under control) dogs too, as there are masses of bridleways and footpaths direct from the site so you can enjoy the countryside on foot without having to go near a main road. You are welcome to spark up the barbecue and you can pick up supplies from the major supermarkets in the pretty market town of Retford (15 minutes’ drive). If you don’t fancy eating alfresco, there is a welcoming pub just a 15-minute stagger away in South Leverton village, which hosts pop-up pizza nights and quizzes. Facilities on site stretch no further than portable toilets and parking by the pitches, and please note that in proper wild-camping style, there is no electricity and no running water.

Local attractions

For outdoor adventures, anglers can try coarse fishing along the River Trent or at Aston Park Fisheries (40 minutes’ drive), and there are several golf courses within a 20-minute radius of the camping field. After peaceful woodland walks? Head for Clumber Park (half an hour). If you’ve got toddlers in tow, the first port of call will probably be Sundown Adventureland (five minutes’ drive) for gentle merry-go-rounds and pirate ships, or the soft-play centre and climbing walls at Fun Farm Lincoln Family Entertainment Centre (half an hour). If you need to wear out older kids, book a session at Combat Zone Paintball (15 minutes). There’s history aplenty to be found in Lincoln (40 minutes) from its magnificent cathedral to an impressive, once-fortified castle, while World War II buffs can visit Battle of Britain sites including the International Bomber Command Centre (35 minutes). For an offbeat afternoon out, discover the weird and wonderful collections of crystals and minerals at the Pure Land Centre (15 minutes), where you’ll also find a manicured Japanese garden to explore.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Wild camping, peaceful and safe. Will be even nicer when the sampling trees grow. Relaxed welcome by owners who met me after a phone-call once arrived. Great for jumping off into countryside for night as a stop off from long journey, with short distance back on to main roads.
