National Water Sports Centre: Exterior view

General

  • Water- and land-based event centre in 270 acres of parkland
  • Easy access to Nottingham city centre, rail network and airport
  • Country walks, nature trails and lots to do for kids

What do you reckon is the main flavour of activities at this Nottinghamshire site? Yup, top of the menu at the National Water Sports Centre near Nottingham are all sorts of watersports: you'll be able to tackle a whitewater course for canoeing, kayaking, rafting and tubing; paddleboarding, open-top canoeing, turbo paddling and open-water swimming.

But! This is a land-based activity centre too, so if you don't fancy plunging into the foamy depths or would quite like to stay dry for a day, other options can be tackled at the outdoor adventure zone where there's an aerial adventure course, miniature golf, a climbing wall, a kids' activity club and archery combat. An assault course, country walks and nature zones are also on site (please note some activities are subject to availability and must be booked at reception; early booking is advisable).

Feeling a bit faint just from reading all this and think you'd rather spectate? The centre has kindly included a country park café and a regatta lake where it hosts its own events like rowing and canoe regattas, dragonboat racing and triathlons. Lots is on offer too to keep the kids amused, including a woodland adventure playground and a nature trail a short stroll away.

Although all this energetic excellence is only 10 minutes' drive from Nottingham city centre, it's well into the countryside and away from anything townie, as it's deep in the 270 acres of parkland of Holme Pierrepont Country Park. The campsite part of the park covers 18 acres and has a facilities block with showers and toilets, and a site shop selling selected groceries and camping supplies.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 4 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

    Well laid out

    Disliked:

Only 1 toilet/shower/pot wash area for the whole site. Alot of foot traffic through the pitch from other areas.
No policing of the site in the evening so there were still large rowdy groups till into the early hours of the morning.
Not all electric hook ups working.

How close was to the water sports. Play park was good. Shop was ok. Liked getting your pitch number & all the relevant information before arriving. Facilities were clean enough. Close to local amenities, shops, takeaways, pubs.

    Disliked:

No security around at nighttime. Our caravan backed on to a large group of noisey campers that decided one night to stay up playing music & being rather loud till 3am! Even thought site rules say past 10:30 must be kept to a minimum. They also had several dogs which they let run lose including a big Newfoundland that came wondering into our awning on the hottest day of the year scaring the wits out my 4year old. To then be met with sending 2 teenagers to retrieve him giving me a mouthful when I asked for him to be put on a lead saying he’s “usually ok” !! Pitches were also on the small side.

On this occasion we found this park very noisy. The park has rules that aren’t being policed so there really is no point to them.

Good, level grass, mature hedges divide the site nicely
    Varied dawn chorus
Location with respect to Nottingham - Sports stadia easily walkable

    Disliked:

Noisy neighbours "we live here" - pitch thru the hedge
    Toilets very average
Bit lonely and lacked a welcome - unmanned policy I guess but generates an impression of indifference and kerching - would be nice to speak to someone.
