General

  • Peaceful base for weekend escapes or longer stays
  • Quick drive from Wheelgate Theme Park and White Post Farm Animal Park
  • Play and picnic areas, info shed and 24-hour CCTV

Frazzled at work? Need a quick escape to the countryside? Or have you generously decided to take the kids on a theme park weekend? Withdraw from work, commutes and other annoyances and use Robin Hood Retreat as a bolthole base for peaceful Nottinghamshire stays.

And what to do once you're here? Go stalking the local countryside for one: the park's location near Newark has it set among a treasure trove of unfounded caches, so get the family up to speed and stride out in your most competitive manner. Then family days out for another, as the Retreat is a short drive from the Wheelgate Theme Park and White Post Farm Animal Park. Go Ape! and a go-kart and quad bike track are also nearby.

The site has a play area, an information shed and a picnic area, alongside amenities of a modern toilet and shower block with free hot showers; secure storage facilities; a laundry, and a freezer for guests' use. The campsite has 24 hour CCTVs in place and a security card entry barrier.

Robin Hood Retreat welcomes contractors as well as holidaymakers.

Lovely quiet site with private pitches, clean shower block. Friendly staff. Kid friendly. Location good for Sherwood Forest, Rufford abbey, wheelgate, sundown, and loads of other activities. Ollerton village close by for shops.

    Disliked:

Shower curtains! However the shower block didnt get that busy for you to be scared someone may whip it and you flash to folk. So all was good.

Enjoyed our time here - clean, neat and convenient 30/08/2018

  • Liked:

    1. The open and quiet location and very conveniently situated for our need to visit Southwell every day of our stay.
    2. Adults' area was very level so easy to set up our caravan.
    3. The immaculate shower facilities - but only two showers for each gender which could well be overwhelmed at very busy times - but not while we were there over the August bank holiday!

    Disliked:

    1. The approach drive - very bumpy, causing some damage to our outfit contents.
    2. Too many large "do" and "do not" notices all over the place - it felt somewhat over-kill, especially as these had been given to us on a printed sheet on arrival.
    3. The disposal of grey water - apart from being inconveniently located; there was a heavy manhole cover to lift which was potentially dangerous.
    4. Electricity supply, set up by staff, seemed to be set up on a timed and/or usage basis. This cut out in the middle of our last night which made leaving more difficult than it might have been. The staff seemed unconcerned when we reported this.
    5. Whilst we appreciated the security of a locked and chained gate after 10.00pm, there could have been problems of access in the case of an emergency.
    6. We liked the openness of the adults area but we felt the caravans were too close to each other, certainly less than 6 metres - a possible fire hazard?

Local attractions

Robin Hood Retreat is a short drive from the rides, farm and waterpark of Robin Hoods Wheelgate Family Theme Park and from the cute creatures of White Post Farm Animal Park. If you're ambling around Sherwood Forest, the Major Oak in its midst should enthrall the kids too, as according to legend it's the shelter where Robin Hood and his merry men slept.

Adrenaline seekers can swing around nearby at Go Ape!, or career around the quad bike and go-kart track near Rufford; the area also has the Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex in Mansfield, National Cycle Network pedals, and Norwood Golf Club a short drive from the site.

For history, Newark Castle on the banks of the Trent or the spectacular city views from high-up Nottingham Castle are both good picks, or you could get to Newstead Abbey, the former twelfth-century monastery with extensive gardens, lakes, ponds and waterfalls.

Other attractions include Rufford Park, Southwell Minster, Mr Straw's House in Worksop and the Southwell Garden Centre.

Must see

  • Sherwood Forest Country Park (5.5 miles)
