  • Wild camping on the banks of the River Nene near Fotheringhay Castle
  • A 10-minute drive to historic Oundle; 25 minutes to Burghley House
  • Back-to-basics grass pitches five minutes’ walk from a traditional pub
What a spot for a wild-camping break. A vast, grass field on the side of the River Nene, with the ruins of Fotheringhay Castle as your backdrop. Whatever the pitches at Castle Farm Site may lack in facilities, they certainly make up for it in the peace and calm of their surroundings. Please note that this site does not have electricity, so you’ll need to bring torches for moving around at night – and if you really can’t bear to be out of touch with the world, chargers for your devices – from home. So what does the site offer? Simple portable toilets, riverside pitches and rural seclusion. Stroll along the river to the historic village of Fotheringhay (five minutes’ walk) for a couple of pints in the local, and there are plenty of traditional and welcoming pubs in less than 20 minutes’ drive. In other practical considerations, you can replenish essentials for the barbecue (again, bring kit from home) from the convenience store in Warmington (five minutes’ drive) or do a serious stock up in Peterborough (20 minutes) supermarkets.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: On arrival I was met by the lovely Kaz who told me about the site and then pointed me in the direction of the most magical spot overlooking the River Nene. Two portaloos were in the same field. The cleanest and nicest smelling portaloos I've ever encountered. The site was incredibly peaceful. I came to sit and relax but other, more adventurous souls were paddle boarding and fishing. The stars at night were beautiful as very little light pollution.

Disliked: Going home!

Liked: The place The surrounding area The hospitality of the guy who was responsible for receiving guests The other guest Friendly people Friendly atmosphere

Disliked: The so called manager who approached us (drunk). Put her light in my face. For no obvious reason she Started shouting to send us all to bed. We were not having loud conversation or loud music. Also when I apologised for any inconvenience she said I am being rude and threatened us saying that we will never step foot on that camping spot again. We stayed 07/09/24-08/09/24

From the manager: Dear Sergiu Thank you for your comments I’m sorry if you felt my management skills were not up to scratch however firstly you did not make us aware that you would be camping as a group. You all booked separately & then proceeded to camp grouped together in the lower field our welcome email clearly states that groups must camp at the top of the hill. At 11pm I always walk around the whole site & check that all music is off as per our policy all music & loud conversation that is likely to disturb others must stop. When asking you to politely turn off your music I also asked you to be aware of your noise levels as you were a larger group We had 3 other groups on-site who were all told the same At 1.45 am I reproached your group & another smaller group as you were all talking quite loud the first group were very polite & apologised When I approached your group I realised you still had your music on albeit quietly so I mentioned that first I then pointed out the time & suggested you all go to bed. There were other people camping around you in tents & if you were keeping me awake in my own tent further away it’s only fair to assume you were disturbing them You then aggressively demanded to know who I was & proceeded to tell me you had read the rules & argued the point I am sorry but your behaviour was unacceptable I have a whole campsite to consider & that is why I shone my torch at you & said if you could not respect the rules we would simply not allow you to book again in the future I can also assure you I was not drunk I was tired as I had been listening to your group from my own tent all night & it was 1.45am On a final note I wish to add we were very disappointed that you decided to leave your rubbish fly tipped in our beautiful village as you are aware we have you on cctv & have contacted you directly about this! Again many thanks for your comments Kind regards Kaz The campsite manager

Liked: Back to basics friendly site (owners & onsite warden polite, friendly, accommodating team) Great for couples and small family set ups Water access for a swim and SUP Historical ruins of a castle ( mound and moat remain) Check out time Fencing around the site Clean porta toilets - far better maintained & cleaned than some permanent toilets I’ve used! Respectful and appropriate number of campers for site - perfect in my opinion as you’re not on top of each other! Easy to book via Pitch Up - this site will be a regular spot for us now The site has a lazy, slow pace and by night hushed voices around camp fires. No Wifi

Disliked: (Not for groups planning late nights drinking, shouting etc.)

Local attractions

If you fancy having an easy day and staying close to the campsite, have a poke around the ruined castle in Fotheringhay (five minutes’ walk). It has played an important part in history, being the birthplace of King Richard III in 1452, and where Mary, Queen of Scots, was put on trial and executed in 1587. It’s worth having a look in the church too, where there are royal monuments and tombs near the altar. Slightly further afield, the mellow-stone market town of Oundle (10 minutes’ drive) is packed with Georgian architecture and indie shops. You can take guided tours of sumptuous apartments in the vast mansion of Burghley House (25 minutes), walk in the gardens, pick up souvenirs at summer food markets and watch concerts throughout the year. Holidaying with kids who need to run off some energy? Spoil them with a session in the play barn at Sacrewell Heritage Farm and Country Centre, or let them cuddle rabbits and guinea pigs at the animal village. Head for Barnwell Country Park (both 10 minutes) so younger kids can have a safe play on the wooden climbing equipment.
