  • Eco-friendly site on the Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire borders
  • A 25-minute drive from Silverstone Circuit and Broughton Castle
  • A 10-minute walk to a café, a shop and a gastropub with a beer garden
Simple eco-friendly stays on the south Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire borders with lots of country strolls, barbecues and sweet quality time… if that has you thinking ‘sign me up’, set your wheels into motion and get out to the Sunnyfield Culworth Campsite, 25 minutes’ drive away from the Silverstone Circuit in Oxfordshire. The site’s goal is to be eco-friendly in everything they do, so facilities at-hand include composting toilets and urinals made from items around the farm. There are several taps, so it’ll be easy to top up your water bottle and flasks before setting off on the local footpaths. And in case you get carried away with your barbecues and can’t quite finish off all the trimmings, there’s also food waste disposal (all other rubbish must be taken away). In all, this is the place to go if you’re craving a simple, back to basics getaway. The village, Culworth, is 10 minutes’ walk away and has a café for all your coffee and cake needs, a butchers (that’s the barbecue ingredients sorted) and a shop. The site says this shop produces some mighty-fine chipolatas, which might just be the icing on top. For pints and pub meals, there’s also an 18th-century village pub with a beer garden, gastro pub-style food and a barn shop selling local home-baked goods, sandwiches, deli produce, pies, ice cream and fresh fruit and veg. Those who like to take in some of the history of each place they visit will be set here. The National Trust’s Canons Ashby, an Elizabethan manor house, is 10 minutes’ drive away and Sulgrave Manor, belonging to George Washington’s family, is five minutes’ drive away. There’s also a gorgeous village church.

Liked: This is a great campsite. You can camp wherever you like. The views are lovely - and if you walk up towards the farm the views become amazing - the chimney pots of Culworth look like something out of a Jane Austen novel. I understand that the owners are extending the site so you will soon be able to camp at the top of the hill - we will definitely be returning to do that! The composting toilets are great - the sawdust makes the toilets smell so much better than normal ones and everything feels very clean. The showers were great - in a little corrugated iron shack and boiling hot with lots of hooks for clothes. The owners also have provided a few games and we very much enjoyed playing Giant Connect4! The village is lovely - the pub has strange opening hours though - closes at 6pm on Saturdays so don’t get caught out! The Star Inn in Sulgrave village has now sadly permanently closed - we got caught out by that.

From the manager: I’m very sorry you did not like our site . We are an eco friendly back to basic site ,so we do not offer modern facilities ,everything is made from repurposed items . The facilities we do have are cleaned at approximately 6am and again at 10-10:30am.also midday and twice in the evening the last clean being between 10pm and 11pm The rubbish is collected every day . But unfortunately on this weekend we did have some campers who would not recycle their rubbish and left items that should have been taken away with them. Which was cleaned away as soon as we were aware . Regards Sunnyfield

A very quiet and peaceful site, with a friendly welcome. My…

Liked: A very quiet and peaceful site, with a friendly welcome. My son enjoyed the extra games (swing ball etc.) that were a welcome addition from our stay last year. A short car journey (5 mins) from the Royal Oak in Eydon that served good food.

Liked: Lovely views, very laid back and back to basics ethos. We loved the diversity on the site: so many different birds, butterflies and insects. Very quiet when we stayed - only 1 other campervan on the site. Proximity to beautiful village with great cafe with vintage shop, gallery and plant shop. The owner was very friendly and we were impressed that she was there first thing in the morning, inspecting the facilities.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Superbly peaceful site, full of greenery and a lovely pond. It was a very picturesque site. Instructions to get there were very clear using a What Three Words direction, I found it no problem! I texted Penny, the manager, an approximate arrival time and she was there to meet me when I arrived. Penny was helpful and friendly, letting me know a nice walk to the village and roughly where to go for food, coffee etc. The showers were actually delightful - really great temperature, clean and just wild enough for it to feel proper outdoorsy still! Toilets were also really clean and the ethics and eco vibe of the whole place was great. We were incredibly lucky and had the whole site to ourselves, we genuinely had a great time at Sunnyfield. We will be back!

Local attractions

A little of the town, please? Catch racing events in Towcester (25 minutes’ drive) or take yourself on a day trip to Northampton (40 minutes), where there’s a local history museum, country park and the Barnes Meadow Nature Reserve. There are a few unique ways to take in the Oxfordshire landscapes, beginning with a farm-based llama trek at Catanger Llama Trekking (15 minutes). Those who want to push their limits a little can get a birds’ eye view with a tandem skydive organised by the Hinton Sky Diving Centre Ltd (20 minutes) too. Morning swim? Daventry Country Park (25 minutes) runs open-water swimming in the summer (and fishing at other times of year). Or perhaps a little cruise down Oxfordshire’s long canal network? There are lots of marinas around, such as the Cropredy Waterside & Marina (15 minutes). Those who’d like to take in a little more history can bet only plenty of that at Broughton Castle (25 minutes), as the medieval manor house is surrounded by a huge moat.
