  • Peaceful and spacious pitches in Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire
  • Rutland Water and Burghley House both 20 minutes' drive away
  • Café next to the site; access to play areas and walking/bike trails
You’ll be following in some pretty famous footsteps when you stay at Fineshade Wood – this Northamptonshire site is tucked away among the ancient trees of Rockingham Forest, which was once a hunting ground for William the Conqueror. These days the forest is a fabulous destination for nature lovers – and now you’ll be able to make the most of your outdoor time by staying overnight too. Pitches here are well spaced and well kept, with access to simple facilities like toilets and a chemical disposal point. A warden is always on site to give a friendly welcome, help you settle in and offer any advice you may need. Once you’re all settled on your pitch, it’s time to explore – perhaps taking your dog for a wander along one of the winding walking trails or pedalling along one of the bike trails. A family trail and a mountain bike section are available, and you can hire bikes (or get them repaired) at the visitor centre. There are five fabulous play areas scattered around the forest too, plus a sensory garden and a hidden wildlife hide where you can watch quietly for passing birds. Handily, right next to the site is a courtyard café that’s open every day to serve up light meals, cakes, proper coffees and tasty gelatos – plus ice creams for holidaying dogs. You’re welcome to bring a barbecue along as well; pick up supplies at the shops in Corby or Stamford (both 15 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This woodland campsite receives consistent praise for its friendly and helpful staff, cleanliness, and spacious pitches. Guests appreciate the tranquil atmosphere, beautiful forest surroundings with ample walking routes, and good 4G signal. While most visitors find the facilities excellent, the absence of showers and pot washing areas is a recurring point, though many acknowledge this is advertised. Some minor issues include occasional noise from external carpark users and limited mobile coverage.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We had the most amazing first camping trip here! The owners were absolutely fantastic — so helpful, welcoming, and made us feel right at home.

The facilities were excellent — the toilets were spotlessly clean and really well looked after.

The location is perfect too: coffee shop for cakes and ice cream right next to the site, 4 parks to explore, and a beautiful walk through the woods.

We couldn’t have asked for a better spot and we’ll definitely be back!

Disliked Can’t wait for there to be showers

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Nice clean site with friendly wardens. The walks in the woods are great (although a lot of litter and not many bins) but this is outside the campsite which was very tidy and well presented. Kind Clifton’s a short cycle ride away with a pub and a shop but there are some small hills on the route. Overall a nice location.

Disliked No showers is a downside especially as this is an expensive site.

Liked A great site, well managed and very friendly staff!
All motorhome amenities available and to a very high standard.
Great walks and cycling in the forest and lots for kids to do.
Toilet block very clean.
We took the option of leaving at 5pm instead of 11am, for a fiver, which was really nice and no rush to pack up!

Disliked Nothing, although showers would be good.
