  • Small, quiet family-run site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • Less than 10 minutes' drive from Skegness; 15 minutes from Ingoldmells
  • Pub five minutes' walk away for home-cooked meals
Ah, Lincolnshire – a smashing county home to sandy beaches, seals and sausages. For peaceful retreats in this splendid part of the world, check in at Rosedale, a family-run site close to the village of Thorpe St Peter. There’s heaps to do in the surrounding area – Skegness (10 minutes' drive) may be famed for its beach (and quite rightly, too), but it’s also packed with other attractions including an aquarium and seal sanctuary. More top sandy spots are within a 20-minute drive, as are animal parks, a National Trust estate, a theme park and a nature reserve that’s particularly popular with birds (twitchers, take note). Facilities at Rosedale are straightforward and well looked-after. Eats can be prepped at the sheltered cooking area or grilled on your barbecue; either way, there’s a handy washing-up area to deal with all the bits and bobs post-meal. Rosedale also has a communal log burner and barbecue area, as well as a bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink. A tea room with a microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and tourist information is available too. Fancy an eve free of suds and scrubs? Owners Keith and Jennie recommend that you sample their local pub's home-cooked food at least once during your stay – The Old Chequers is a proper country inn with open fires, a spacious garden and fine ales on tap. Oh, and best of all, it's a mere five-minute stroll away (possibly a tad longer on the way back…).

Route directions

Some cross-country routes can take you down very narrow single-track roads, so please check. The best route is to come is via the Boston area, and then take the A52 and turn onto the B1195 through Wainfleet. As you come out of Wainfleet, turn left at the white house on Burgh Road. Follow this road. At the bridge, veer left. The site is around a sharp bend. If you are coming from the west or nort, ignore Satnav directions via Irby in the Marsh. The best route is via the A1028- A158 - A52 Burgh Le Marsh or Wainfleet.

Local attractions

Itching for an ice cream on the beach? Of course you are, and you're in luck – this part of Lincolnshire has some of the finest shores around. Skegness (10 minutes' drive) will probably be your first port of call: head here for the awesome aquarium, seal sanctuary and pier. Make tracks for Skegness Raceway (15 minutes) if you fancy a spot of stock car and banger racing, too. Family-friendly Ingoldmells (15 minutes) is another top seaside choice. Check out this friendly coastal village if you're travelling with kids – you can be pretty sure they'll be pleased with the cute critters at Hardy's Animal Farm and the classic coasters at ever-popular Fantasy Island theme park. For more pulse-raising thrills, see how high you can bounce at Jump Warriors, a local trampoline park (15 minutes). A tad tired after all that action? Make time to wander around Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for restorative views – this is a birdlife hub too, so make sure to pack the binoculars. For equally calming strolls or elegant cream teas in an 18th-century setting, check out National Trust-managed Gunby Hall (15 minutes).

Hawthorne shepherd's hut

Liked We stayed in the Sheperd’s hut and it was brilliant for the kids. They loved the layout of both the room and the whole site. The whole experience was just unusual enough to feel a little bit magical whilst still having all the home comforts we wanted and being close enough to the seaside to be a great base for an active weekend. Not to mention fantastic hosts and a really nice welcoming atmosphere.

Excellent experience all round.

Bell tent

Liked Loved the spacious tent. We used the BBQ and fire facilities twice.
Shower room and toilet perfectly clean. Kitchen facilities like the fridge, microwave and kettle were a big big convenience and a bonus.
The host Keith (or Quiche as my kids called him!!!) was really friendly and knowledgeable.

Kids are already asking when we can come back.

Disliked Shower pressure wasn’t great. But this is a small detail.

Stay here!!!

Bell tent

Liked Had an amazing time at Rosedale campsite this weekend. We booked a bell tent for the weekend and Keith could t have gone any further for us if he needed too.

Everything requested was catered for perfectly. Even coming out his way late at night to bring us some plates to eat off.

I honestly couldn’t give this little site any more praise

Massively recommended. You won’t be disappointed

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Great owners, really helpful. There was flooding in the area when we visited and was given the opportunity to cancel. We decided to go and the owner was great at giving us advice while travelling on local roads and how to avoid the floods. The campsite facility's were spotless. And there were lots of little extras, for example; the little shed with a microwave, toaster and kettle. Grounds were very well kept. Great base to get to skegness.... thank you.
