  • Small site a mile from Woodhall Spa's heritage attractions
  • A 15-minute drive to Lincolnshire Wolds and half an hour to the coast
  • Great walks nearby; spot Battle of Britain planes overhead
If you’ve got an interest in history in general, and World War II in particular, you’ll quite probably love a stay at Lincolnshire’s Happy Days Holiday Retreat. This small site is on the edge of the village of Woodhall Spa, where the Dambusters were based and which now has a splendid heritage trail to follow. It’s worth keeping an eye on the skies while you’re in residence at this site – the Battle of Britain memorial flight is based nearby and frequently uses the area for practice runs. And even if you don’t spot the vintage planes in action you may catch glimpses of some of the bird life that calls this area home (or the deer, rabbits and pheasants that scamper about at ground level…) Keen walkers should be happy with their lot around here too: nearby trails include the Spa Trail and the three miles of flat bridleway that run along the route of the old Horncastle to Woodhall Junction railway line (part of the 147-mile Viking Way and with local sculptures scattered along the way to spot). The pathways of the Lincolnshire Wolds are about 15 minutes’ drive away too, or you can hit the seaside around Skegness in just over half an hour. Staying a little closer to base, it’s about a mile’s walk to Woodhall Spa’s pubs, shops and restaurants, to its golf course and open-air pool or to the historic Kinema in the Woods. Amenities on site are simple but stretch to showers, ice pack freezing and free wifi.

Tulip electric grass pitch

Liked We loved the location and the very warm welcome from the site owners Karen and Tony who kept the facilities spotless and gave us local information and checked it was never noisy after 10pm. Restaurants in Woodhall Spa excellent - especially the Indian Village and Zucci's - a Mediterranean place. We will return.
Many thanks

Local attractions

There are several places nearby where you can swot up on your local history. Start at Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre (10 minutes’ drive) to see the home of the Battle of Britain memorial flight, then move on to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes) and International Bomber Command Centre (half an hour). Historic Lincoln (half an hour) has a cathedral and castle to wander around, and you can see where Henry IV was born at Bolingbroke Castle (20 minutes). If that’s not the kind of thing the kids are into, try instead the fast-paced track days at Tattershall Karting Centre (10 minutes) or Cadwell Park (20 minutes), or head to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Park (half an hour) to meet tigers, parrots, monkeys and all sorts of reptiles. Seaside days should certainly be on the cards around here too: it’ll take you a little over half an hour to drive to Skegness for the aquarium, seal sanctuary and traditional amusements, or you could try the dunes of Mablethorpe or the quiet stretch at Sutton on Sea (both 45 minutes).
