Happy Days Holiday Retreat: Looking down the paddock

General

  • Small site a mile from Woodhall Spa's heritage attractions
  • A 15-minute drive to Lincolnshire Wolds and half an hour to the coast
  • Great walks nearby; spot Battle of Britain planes overhead

If you’ve got an interest in history in general, and World War II in particular, you’ll quite probably love a stay at Lincolnshire’s Happy Days Holiday Retreat. This small site is on the edge of the village of Woodhall Spa, where the Dambusters were based and which now has a splendid heritage trail to follow.

It’s worth keeping an eye on the skies while you’re in residence at this site – the Battle of Britain memorial flight is based nearby and frequently uses the area for practice runs. And even if you don’t spot the vintage planes in action you may catch glimpses of some of the bird life that calls this area home (or the deer, rabbits and pheasants that scamper about at ground level…)

Keen walkers should be happy with their lot around here too: nearby trails include the Spa Trail and the three miles of flat bridleway that run along the route of the old Horncastle to Woodhall Junction railway line (part of the 147-mile Viking Way and with local sculptures scattered along the way to spot). The pathways of the Lincolnshire Wolds are about 15 minutes’ drive away too, or you can hit the seaside around Skegness in just over half an hour.

Staying a little closer to base, it’s about a mile’s walk to Woodhall Spa’s pubs, shops and restaurants, to its golf course and open-air pool or to the historic Kinema in the Woods. Amenities on site are simple but stretch to showers, ice pack freezing and free wifi.

Please note

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

This is a really small site, smaller than we expected, but this is definitely not a bad thing. There was plenty of space between the pitches and the site generally felt calm, clean and safe.

We stayed as a couple with our 2-year-old and another adult friend. There were a few other families with toddlers on the site and the atmosphere was relaxed and the children could potter and explore.

It was a really nice touch to have toys and garden games available in an open garage that people could use.

The toilets were portaloos, which I was a little hesitant about, but these were kept spotless. There is an outdoor shower hut that we didn't use, as there is also access to a proper indoor bathroom. It initially felt strange going into the annex of the house to use the washing facilities, but it got to feel like a nice luxury.

The owners were lovely and felt really approachable. We would certainly consider staying again for another short break.

    Disliked:

The only thing I would have liked to see would be better dishwashing facilities. There is an outdoor sink with cold tap and flask of hot water, but the option for running hot water would have been better, if this can be arranged. We found it easier to boil a kettle in the tent for the most part.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments.. We now have planning permission for a sink which is a future project

This was a perfect first camping holiday for me and my family. We have 3 children aged 10,3,18 months. All really enjoyed the trip. Great wifi so they were never bord. There were other children who played lovely together. We forgot a couple of bits and they were happy to lend us some free of charge which was a nice touch. Thank you!

    Disliked:

The only criticism which is extremely minor would be when you have little children it could do with a gate to stop them running up the track toward a very busy road. It just means you have to keep a close eye on them. As I say though minor.

From the manager...

We're please you enjoyed it. There is a gate there but tend to leave it open in the day for cars to come in and out but safety of children is important so we're happy to close it if our guests prefer.

Amelia Vera was wonderful. It was quaint, clean and my granddaughters loved staying there. The shower facilities and the porta loo were spotless and were checked periodically throughout the day. There was no shortage of hot water for the shower which is always a bonus. The host Karen was extremely accommodating and communication was great.

    Disliked:

The washing up facilities weren’t great but I believe this is being sorted

Local attractions

There are several places nearby where you can swot up on your local history. Start at Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre (10 minutes’ drive) to see the home of the Battle of Britain memorial flight, then move on to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes) and International Bomber Command Centre (half an hour). Historic Lincoln (half an hour) has a cathedral and castle to wander around, and you can see where Henry IV was born at Bolingbroke Castle (20 minutes).

If that’s not the kind of thing the kids are into, try instead the fast-paced track days at Tattershall Karting Centre (10 minutes) or Cadwell Park (20 minutes), or head to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Park (half an hour) to meet tigers, parrots, monkeys and all sorts of reptiles.

Seaside days should certainly be on the cards around here too: it’ll take you a little over half an hour to drive to Skegness for the aquarium, seal sanctuary and traditional amusements, or you could try the dunes of Mablethorpe or the quiet stretch at Sutton on Sea (both 45 minutes).
