Fishing lake

  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • One well-stocked fishing lake
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll
Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here. Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has one catch and release fishing lake within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person. This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash. Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

What customers say

This is a peaceful, spacious campsite, praised for its friendly and helpful staff, particularly Colin. Visitors highlight the lovely lake scenery, plentiful fish for anglers, and well-maintained, tidy grounds. While facilities are described as basic and in need of updating, they are generally clean and functional with hot water. Some mention issues with nettles and occasional noise from a nearby pub, but many intend to return.

From the manager: Hi,

Everyone that I spoke to, including you, told me that everything was fine. I can't correct faults unless I am made aware of them.

Telling me one thing to my face and then writing a review like this helps nobody.

On previous Bank Holidays I have had over 30 pitches filled, with no-one complaining about space. This year there weren't even 20 pitches taken (my conscious decision). As I have 26 hookups I don't believe that you would have found a more spacious pitch over the August Bank Holiday.

Thanks for not coming back, I really appreciate it.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Neighbours were nice. Field was well tended.

Disliked Showers 🤢😡. NOT CLEAN. Going mouldy. Hot water took about 10 minutes to come through, then intermittent. Desperately tried to find somewhere else to stay so wouldn’t have to use the shower, but everywhere else full up due to Bank holiday. Shower block definitely needs demolishing and a new one building. Elsan point was disgusting with the “obvious” being smeared round the rough concrete enclosure. You could smell it before you got anywhere near it 🤮. We don’t fish, but lake/pond looked stagnant around the edges and not many access points due to severe overgrowth of grasses, etc. Other than fishing, not much to do nearby without travelling. Only wildlife we saw was rabbits. Will definitely not be going back. Photos of site very misleading until you get to the end of them and then some truth can be seen.

From the manager: Your neighbours were your friends!

Neither of you liked it when you couldn't get your own way over making us move some Chinese customers further away from you!

I don't care what lies you want to spout, and I'm extremely pleased that you won't be coming back.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked The site has everything you need.
The lakes are well kept with really clean pegs.
Liked the people that worked there, really friendly and extremely helpful.
Couldn't have asked for more

Disliked Could get WiFi and signal but it is dependent on who you are with.
I am BT (EE) and it wasn't the best.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words.

I fully understand the frustration over mobile reception. It's particularly ironic that there's a mobile transmitter 50yds from the shower block. Just to rub salt in, I am also with EE, and I can't get reception from my own tower!!!

I will pass your comments on to Dave.

I look forward to seeing you again.

Very best regards
Alf

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area. As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay. By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.
