Ashleigh Lakes: Fishing lake

General

  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • Two well-stocked fishing lakes
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll

Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here.

Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has two catch and release fishing lakes within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp; the bigger lake also has crucian carp, tench and bream. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person.

This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash.

Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

We were the only tent on the site during our stay, which went for a quiet week!
The caravan and camping fields were well maintained, and the fishing lakes appeared to be popular.
There was a good supply of hot water for the 2 showers / bathrooms, and for washing up.
The Fish and Chips Red Bus which is in the village at teatime on Thursdays is excellent !

    Disliked:

The washing up facility was adequate for us, but I can imagine that the one wash up sink might not be enough for a field full of campers.

The staff were helpful and if something needed fixing they were straight onto it. They drove around the site regularly to make sure everyone was ok.
We asked for a pitch near the amenities' as my mum struggles to walk very far, they accommodated our request no problem.
Our neighbor complained about some guests behind us and the owner moved our neighbor to a quieter pitch and also had a word with the guests that were causing issues with some guests.
The walk around the lakes were lovely and not too much for my 16 year old dog.
There is a post office/shop 2 minutes from the site, the staff were lovely and again, not far to walk to at all, even my Mum managed it.

    Disliked:

There are only 2 showers for the whole site which i personally think is not enough, especially when the site is full like it was for the Jubilee weekend, the ques in the morning were a bit silly. The staff do come and clean regular but would need to be more regular if the weather was bad.
I did see porterloos around the site, so presume there were more than the two toilets with the showers.

I don't think there were enough bins for the busy period and no recycling which surprised me. The staff did come round to empty the bins but there were just 3 old style dustbins, which to me are too small.

Super little site, nicely sheltered and a sun trap on those sunny days, the fishing lake was a huge hit with the husband, children and brother in law. The site is very back to basics so don’t expect full on luxury, it’s a great fisherman’s site. The manager colin, a young man didn’t catch his name and Shelley were all very welcoming and helpful, kept on top of the rubbish especially with it being a very busy bank holiday weekend, the toilets and showers were cleaned everyday and always stocked up with loo roll and paper towels for hand drying, the showers are very basic though, one evening there was no hot water, so popped to see the manager and they came out immediately to sort it.. nothing was too much trouble.
There is a small shop opposite the site where you will get pretty much everything you need including fresh bread. We had a walk round the the Elizabethan centre for their jubilee celebrations and the kids enjoyed that too. Very pretty quaint village. Nearest big supermarket is about 15/20 minutes drive away.
The pitch sizes were really good, not all on top of each other! We will be back.

    Disliked:

Only tiny criticism was that the showers could do with a de-bug, I know they will get full of spiders and critters, but a good wipe down everyday would get rid of them, Also one of the shower heads is broken, not major but could do with being fixed and lastly if busy on a bank holiday they could do with 1 other shower porter cabin. But other than that nothing to really fault.

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area.

As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay.

By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.

Must see

  • Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (7.2 miles)
