General

  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • Two well-stocked fishing lakes
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll

Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here.

Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has two catch and release fishing lakes within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp; the bigger lake also has crucian carp, tench and bream. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person.

This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash.

Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

From the manager...

Hi,

Thank you for such a positive review, it is much appreciated.

Additional showers and toilets are made available during busier periods. The existing set-up works well up to 12-15 pitches, and many of my customers (particularly those with younger children) like having their own shower room with toilet and wash basin. I'm hoping to have permanent additional showers and washing facilities available next year.

Thanks again and very best regards
Alf

Nice small site which was kept very clean and tidy.
I did prefer this over the massive overcrowded places we have visited previously.
Alf (owner) was very welcoming and had accommodated our needs perfectly. He was happy to chat and always said hello when passing while going about his business.
Pitches are grass and are level.
2 toilets and 2 showers (one of each in each room) we did have to wait on occasions to use the toilet while others on site were showering. Other reviews have stated there were 6 showers so maybe during busy periods more temporary ones are added.
We found the facilities clean and tidy everyday and alf was in and out throughout the day to ensure these standards were maintained.
The fishing lake is just to the back of the site and is only a short walk and appears to be ram packed with fish. They were going bonkers for some bread right at the edges of the lake. Everyone of our 4 fishermen caught in just 4 hours of fishing.
The husband spotted some sort of deer/muntjac bouncing in the fields while returning from the fishing lake.
As others have stated there are some noisey birds but that didn't affect us at all and a campsite can't be held responsible for wildlife.
Yes the local club a couple of fields over was playing loud music on the Saturday night of our stay but again this isn't the responsibility of the site owners and again it didn't bother us as our children aged 17 months 3 years 13 years and 15 years all slept through it fine as did we.
While here We had some wind but the massive trees around the site work well to block most of it.
I will also add for anyone who wants, needs or uses Internet that unless you have vodafone or 3 don't expect Internet signal.
We were a family with 4 adults all on different networks so we were able to compare perfectly.
    Vodafone yes
    three yes
    O2 occasionally and
    virgin zero.
It did Look like some work was being done on a phone tower (vodafone) so maybe this will be fixed in the very near future or WiFi will be offered on site.
All in all we loved this little hidden gem.

    Disliked:

    Not much in the area.
Nearest supermarket is approximately 20 mins drive away.
    Stairs to enter toilets.

From the manager...

Karina hi,

WOW!! Thank for your positive and ,by far, the most comprehensive review of my site.

During busy periods (normally only Bank Holidays), I do provide 4-6 additional showers and extra Chemical Toilets (event hire standard, not building site). I hope to build some additional, permanent showering/washing up facilities for next year. I'm also hoping that I can then possibly provide clothes washing and drying facilities.

I do try and maintain this as a peaceful site, with time limits on late night noise etc. and I thank you for understanding that sometimes there are activities, beyond my control, that don't help my cause.

There is a 4G tower being erected at the moment. I am advised that there will be both O2 and Vodaphone services provided from it. I am also looking at the possibility of me providing a site WiFi service next year. Watch this space.

Many thanks again for your review and I look forward to seeing you all here again.

Very best regards
Alf

Hi,

Thank you for your positive review.

I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the peace and quiet here so much and look forward to seeing you again.

I am determined to have some form of 'eatery' here on site next year as having to drive out for a meal seems to be becoming more and more of an issue. Watch this space.

    Disliked:

Attitude of the owner, he came round telling people to be quite and when people told him about the music from outside the site he came back with I had to kick idiots of the site last night don’t be the next ones. 3am loud music from a house a few fields away.
Could have just said please keep it down it’s getting late and others are trying to sleep.

From the manager...

Hi,

I'm glad that you appreciated the space available on my busiest weekend ever.

I am, obviously, disappointed that you found me so rude - I think that's the first time in nearly 100 reviews that anyone has said anything bad about me. I actually don't remember having that conversation and, as you have decided to remain anonymous there is no name to help me recollect.

I did , in no uncertain manner, ask a group of nine lads to leave the site - they were breaking down trees to start a bonfire on their pitch so I am more than happy that I was justified in doing that. Three bottles of Jaggermeister were found in the rubbish they left behind - which probably explains their behaviour.

The next night I was made aware of loud music being played. I then took quite a walk only to find out that it was coming from a couple of fields away and further up the village. This noise nuisance was then reported to Lincolnshire Police.

The two instances weren't connected and I find it unlikely, in the extreme, that I would be rude to a customer for complaining about a noise over which I had no control (or, indeed, any customer behaving in a responsible manner)

Interestingly the phrase "can you turn it down a bit please it's getting late" is exactly the phrase I have used in the past and, I suspect, used with you if you were being too loud after 10pm.

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area.

As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay.

By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.
