Ashleigh Lakes: Fishing lake

General

  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • Two well-stocked fishing lakes
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll

Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here.

Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has two catch and release fishing lakes within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp; the bigger lake also has crucian carp, tench and bream. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person.

This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash.

Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

Please note

The toilet facilities are closed until Sunday 16 May 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

The shower facilities are closed until Sunday 16 May 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

It’s a very friendly site. The owner is very helpful and informative about the area. I was travelling with my 3 dogs and wanted a quiet long weekend, which I had.
I think the Covid precautions on the site were adequate and the anti bacterial and cleaning solutions were plenty.

    Disliked:

It was a wifi black spot.
They have a tower erected but at present there are issues as to why it’s not working.
It’s not the end of the road not to have it. I would use it to find out about the area if it’s my first time there like this was. But you can always work around it.

    Dirty toilets. Overpriced.

From the manager...

Hi

I clean the toilets several times a day and follow the government provided guidelines during this Covid period. During the pandemic I have stopped providing toilet rolls and hand towels. There was hand sanitiser on the outside of the unit and also in each shower room. Each room also had an anti-bacterial spray together with a clean cloth which was changed at least daily. There were always 2 buckets and mops available which had a combination of bleach and disinfectant in them.

Regards
Alf

Toilet and shower facility's was very poor standards. Toilet seats would come of when you used them. Wasn't as clean as you would expect during a pandemic. Don't expect to have to clean the shower or toilet before you could use them.

Very peaceful site lovely area. Situated in nice village, near to Crowland which was a beautiful town. Very starry night’s lots of wildlife. The site was very quiet which suited us and the owner was very pleasant

    Disliked:

Needed a bit of tlc, grass was long could have done with a mow also the drive to the lake needed levelling some very deep troughs would be very awkward in wet weather. The shower block could also have been a problem if the site was busy as only 2 but overall we enjoyed our stay

From the manager...

Hi,
Thank you for your positive review., it is much appreciated.

I'm hoping that the track problems will be cleared over this Winter - this is an on-going problem, of some 16 months, with the people that installed the mobile 'phone mast.

I am, next week, looking at a stand alone 4-bay (all individual bays) shower block. I will then either convert the existing unit into ladies and gents toilets or replace the existing - watch this space.
Best regards
Alf

Alf was very helpful and friendly and made us feel welcome, he was helpful when there was a blip with the electricity but that was resolved. A peaceful quiet site with all the facilities you need. Felt safe with the procedures in place and there’s a well stocked convenient post office/general store within walk of the site in case you forget anything.

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area.

As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay.

By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.

Must see

  • Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (7.2 miles)
  • Peterborough Cathedral (11.9 miles)
