  • Peaceful site on the outskirts of Sutton on Sea, in Lincolnshire
  • Mablethorpe five minutes’ drive; The North Sea Observatory 20 minutes
  • Grazing wild deer in the fields; barbecues allowed
For an adults-only seaside holiday without the constant din of amusement arcades ringing in your ears, you might want to try Ambers Lodge, occupying a tree-lined field on the outskirts of Sutton on Sea, in Lincolnshire. The village centre and the beach can be reached in about half an hour on foot (or five minutes by car), which means that all the regular seaside attractions (from sandcastle building to fish and chip shops) are easily accessible without being in your face. This is really a place for guests keen for a peaceful retreat punctuated by animal encounters: deer graze around the site, and you’ll wake up in the morning to a glorious dawn chorus. Barbecues are allowed, and you can source provisions in Sutton on Sea. There's a toilet block and shower facilities on site too. You might want to take yourself off to the seaside town of Mablethorpe (five minutes’ drive), where you can relax on benches with views of colourful beach huts or have a game of miniature golf. After that, carry on your tour by hiring bikes and cycle along the seafront all the way to Huttoft Beach (about half an hour).

This is a clean, quiet, and peaceful campsite praised for its friendly and helpful staff and generous pitch space. Guests appreciate the brilliant location, close to Sutton on Sea and Mablethorpe, offering good value for money. While the site is described as basic with essential facilities, some visitors noted the toilet and shower facilities are communal and could be improved, with a suggestion for hot water for washing up.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I loved the peace and quiet of Ambers Lodge. It's very clear in the listing that this is specifically a quiet site with several rules to make sure this happens. I always look for this in a site, and have lost track of the amount of times a 'peaceful and tranquil' site ends up more like a nightclub at 1am. Thankfully, this site delivered on the promise.
The site does have very basic facilities, which won't be everyone's cup of tea and this would be best seen as a 'back to basics' site, almost like a farm site from the old days. i.e basic facilities with a fee to match. Because of this, I would say this is perhaps not the place to come for a first camping trip, or if you're used to camping club type facilities, unless you adjust your expectations dramatically. That said, the facilities that are there are cleaned regularly and I have no doubt that the exceptionally friendly owner and caretaker would try very hard to accommodate any requests.
In summary, I loved the old school vibe of the place, and would say that the site and staff are the most genuine and least pretentious I've come across in years.
Finally in terms of location, the site is superb. You have a short drive/moderate walk to Sutton on Sea and Mablethorpe, as well as Skegness. I haven't been to this area in around 20 years, and had a day out in Mablethorpe to relive my youth and fell in love with the place all over again. A traditional seaside town that's big enough to have the noise of the arcades etc, with relaxing quiet areas just a short walk away. The beach is award winning, and it's just a positive time overall.

Disliked I didn't dislike anything, except that it's not open longer, as I'd definitely had come back again before the winter.

Electric optional grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great little camp site, it’s basic but it’s got everything you need and is spotless, The toilet block and showers could do with updating but these are clean. I’ve read in another review that these are due to be refurbished shortly. The gentleman who greeted us was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely return.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The peace and quiet of a small adults only site. We were made most welcome by Brian and he was really helpful throughout our stay. Amenities were kept very clean. Loved being so close to the sea, a nice 45minute walk and we were on the promenade at Trusthorpe or in Sutton on Sea. This is a real back to basics campsite which we really liked and we will certainly be back.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely few days on a generous grass pitch at this small, quiet site only a 5 min drive from the nearest beach at Sutton-on-Sea. Flat ground & sheltered from the wind by high hedges. One free hot shower, a few 'unisex' toilets (with hot water I believe) and a ladies loo & basin - cold water but both always spotlessly clean & with loo roll provided! The manager was so friendly & helpful, as was the owner, and as a solo female camper, I couldn't have felt safer and would definitely book again. At £15 per night on a Bank Holiday w/e, it was brilliant!

Electric optional grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had such a lovely mini break here! The campsite feels wonderfully secluded, surrounded by trees that give plenty of shelter while letting you feel really close to nature. Everyone on site was so friendly and welcoming – always happy to stop for a chat or offer suggestions of where to go and what to see in the area, which made our stay even more enjoyable.

The toilet and shower block was spotless and clearly well looked after, with regular checks that kept everything clean and comfortable. It really added to the relaxing vibe, knowing everything was taken care of.

All in all, it was the perfect spot for a peaceful getaway. We left feeling refreshed and will definitely be back again!

From the manager: We had recently had our front concreted so temporarily had to put our American firth wheel on the camp site car park, not on the camp site itself, this was explained to all the guests, all of which were happy with this as to be fair it did not affect the camp site in any way, we do our upmost to please our guests but sadly you can’t please everyone

The site was great but was let down with the surrounding demographics.

Electric optional grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The site itself was good. Those who run the site were very friendly and welcoming.

Disliked The area of Mablethorpre itself was not a nice place, in terms of a generally run down feeling and the presence of so many Reform voters. It was a pleasure to leave Lincolnshire.

Electric optional grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice flat field easy electric hook up, Brian who greeted us was amazing very friendly and helpful. So much could be improved the shower & toilet blocks could look so much nicer with a couple of plant pots outside on the gravel and maybe painted a brighter colour so they look nicer for people not just cabins turned into them.
That’s all really that I’d say needs improvement all in all a nice couple of days away.

Disliked Nothing just as above.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us, we totally agree with your comments on the toilet block, as you will have see we have a lot of improvement work going on and the toilets are next in line, so hopefully when you visit again they will be done, plus your tip regarding plant pots is a great idea. Regards Rusty

Local attractions

Wildlife enthusiasts shouldn't miss the Seal Sanctuary Wildlife Centre (10 minutes' drive), which looks after injured or orphaned grey and common seals with a view to release them, though there are some long-term residents too. Other animals here include the ever-popular meerkats, squirrel monkeys and pygmy goats. A striking modern building perched over the beach, The North Sea Observatory, Chapel Point (20 minutes) is a top spot for birdwatchers. Binoculars are provided, and you can spy seasonal residents like ducks and wild swans in winter, and house martins and swallows in the late summer months. There's cycling, walking and lots of other land-based activities to enjoy in the local area. Maybe, though, you’d rather have a go at kayaking or paddleboarding, both of which are available at several spots within 45 minutes. (If you’d rather just watch, see if there’s also a lakeside picnic area.)
