  • Peaceful site on the outskirts of Sutton on Sea, in Lincolnshire
  • Mablethorpe five minutes’ drive; The North Sea Observatory 20 minutes
  • Grazing wild deer in the fields; barbecues allowed
For an adults-only seaside holiday without the constant din of amusement arcades ringing in your ears, you might want to try Ambers Lodge, occupying a tree-lined field on the outskirts of Sutton on Sea, in Lincolnshire. The village centre and the beach can be reached in about half an hour on foot (or five minutes by car), which means that all the regular seaside attractions (from sandcastle building to fish and chip shops) are easily accessible without being in your face. This is really a place for guests keen for a peaceful retreat punctuated by animal encounters: deer graze around the site, and you’ll wake up in the morning to a glorious dawn chorus. Barbecues are allowed, and you can source provisions in Sutton on Sea. There's a toilet block and shower facilities on site too. You might want to take yourself off to the seaside town of Mablethorpe (five minutes’ drive), where you can relax on benches with views of colourful beach huts or have a game of miniature golf. After that, carry on your tour by hiring bikes and cycle along the seafront all the way to Huttoft Beach (about half an hour).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very pleasant quiet site. Brilliant location. Went to the Sutton on sea. Working men’s club. They couldn’t be friendly. Turn on a Saturday and northern soul on a Sunday. Skegness is just down the road as well as mablethorpe. The site is very flat and sheltered. There are a couple of toilets and a shower. The owner is very nice when he’s not there he has a friend on site. we could choose where we wanted to set up. Granted it’s not very posh. But what do you want for £15 a night. I loved it. It’s what camping is all about

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic! We've been camping for over 30yrs and value for money and location it's right up there. Just a short drive to Sutton and Mablethorpe and of course when in season the must see Russell's International Circus (phenomenal exciting show....a must see for all you Greatest Showman fans). Flat pitches, plenty room, peaceful. Large shower room with excellent electric shower, clean toilet block with lots of cubicles. Yes it's a unisex toilet which no problem and there is a separate ladies for those a little unsure. Small field so noise is minimal. Shower to people ratio is better than anywhere else! We will be back every chance we get. Brian and Russell very easy going and make sure you are happy etc. Superb 10/10 for us seasoned experienced campers.

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Wildlife enthusiasts shouldn't miss the Seal Sanctuary Wildlife Centre (10 minutes' drive), which looks after injured or orphaned grey and common seals with a view to release them, though there are some long-term residents too. Other animals here include the ever-popular meerkats, squirrel monkeys and pygmy goats. A striking modern building perched over the beach, The North Sea Observatory, Chapel Point (20 minutes) is a top spot for birdwatchers. Binoculars are provided, and you can spy seasonal residents like ducks and wild swans in winter, and house martins and swallows in the late summer months. There's cycling, walking and lots of other land-based activities to enjoy in the local area. Maybe, though, you’d rather have a go at kayaking or paddleboarding, both of which are available at several spots within 45 minutes. (If you’d rather just watch, see if there’s also a lakeside picnic area.)
