General

  • Traditional Lincolnshire country pub
  • Home-cooked food and a cosy fireplace for winter nights
  • Easy access to main attractions and good transport links

The Waggon and Horses is in the rural village of South Reston on the A157 between Louth and Mablethorpe and just a 15-minute drive from the coastal resorts of Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe and Sutton on Sea.

This is a peaceful campsite close to the Lincolnshire Wolds with access to the village pub, a beer garden and a play area. For over 130 years its hosts have offered a warm welcome to visitors from near and far: current owners Nigel and Jean continue this tradition and expand the hospitality even further by offering camping pitches to its customers.

The site has toilets, in the pub entrance and accessible 24 hours per day. Hot and cold water is available from the sinks. A shower is at the rear of the pub, accessed by a coded key pad: please ask for the code on arrival if you want to use the shower.

A bus service stopping at the site entrance runs to Louth, Mablethorpe and Skegness.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Good value for money, facilities and long term caravans need attention 02/09/2017

Friendly staff, well organised and well run pub. Site is quiet, no real issue with noise from the roads. Couple of nice circular walks if you have a dog. Good value for money if you have a caravan with all your own facilities. Small shop in the pub for all the essentials was good. We had a nice three night stay.

    Disliked:

A few long term caravans on site looked a bit shabby and 'green' and the chemical disposal point really does need attention. The tap for the water was pretty slow as well. It's a shame really as there is clearly a toilet and shower block that could do with being opened up and being used. (the pub toilets were always available). Don't get me wrong it's cracking value for money, charge a few pounds more a night and update the basic facilities and it will a real winner.

The pub was awesome. Food was fantastic, lovely area for the children to play outside.
    Really nice atmosphere.
Lovely watching the children make friends and play.

    Disliked:

Lack of facilities - the pub toilets are very lacking.
    Shower was awful.
Appearance of almost abandoned caravans on site.
    Lack of obvious marked pitches.

We arrived after our friends, and we had booked together asking for pitches together. They had been told where to pitch, between 2 seasonal caravans. They were told they wouldn't be using the caravans and so we pitched very close to the caravan. Which was awkward and embarrassing when they then turned up! They could barely open their door (and we didn't have too much choice but to pitch so close).
When the lady came round to ask if all was ok, we said about the caravan and she seemed to think it was ok because the owners of the caravan wouldn't have been bothered. But that was really not the point.

It seems the site has caravans that are either seasonal pitches or storage. It's hard to tell with some of them. And when these aren't being used, the owner pitches people very close to them, in front of them. They need to decide whether it is a seasonal pitch (and so already being used) or if it's a stored caravan (and so move it to the side away from the pitches).
There were far too many tents and other units pitched too close. Some had overlapping guyropes.

The toilets in the pub were not great. There was no hot water in the ladies, and one v small sink with two toilets. This is for a large, popular pub and the whole campsite. It's not ideal when my husband had to queue for the loo with two v small children on Saturday evening and was approached by drunk people talking to the girls.
How are you supposed to go brush your teeth and get a wash in a pub that's open, with only one sink?
The facilities need an upgrade, or need to be advertised as having no washing facilities. It says no washing up facilities but there is nowhere I would be happy to go and have a wash.
I tried the shower. The lock was so stiff I got locked in for a good 5 minutes. It was dirty (with no mop or anything to attempt to clean it) and it dribbled either red hot or freezing cold. It must be connected to some other water source, either in the kitchen or the water tap on the site) as i had a decent stream for about a minute before it stopped to a dribble.

The photo with the barrier and a 5mph sign.........there was no barrier to be seen and the other cars were doing well over 5mph. Not great with lots of small children on site.

My husband cleared up dog poo from other people's dog than ours.

Overall, just not well managed or looked after.

It's such a shame as it could be really lovely with a little love and organisation.

The food in the pub is brilliant. The other campers were all friendly and there was a nice atmosphere on the site- kids all playing together and having fun.

    Disliked:

This site has the potential to be amazing! But is sadly let down by owners who don't seem to care. The site is home to about 10 seasonally pitched caravans, however they are not pitched very well, one is almost half way in the hedge. Some are dirty, almost looking amandonded.
We arrived and we're told to pitch between 2 seasonal caravans as the owners definitely wouldn't be using them this weekend, so we did- 2 Folding campers on one pitch. Lo & behold- one caravans owner turned up a few hours later and was not happy!
The shower was filthy- beyond filthy! Barely ran in more than a trickle and temperature fluctuated from freezing to boiling hot. Toilets in the pub ok- but not hot water to the sink. And not big enough to wash face etc in.
Very small pitches, not level and not marked or managed well. Tents so close their guy ropes overlap and the units just kept coming.... squeeze them in anywhere seemed to be the motto! A real shame as it could be lovely but it's just not :-(

    Disliked:

Not really disliked as such, but just feel a lot more could have been done to improve the organization of the site, what looked like long term stays there were parked at odd angles, which made it difficult to get to the electric hookups, and I think if you reorganized could probably fit more in without compromising on space between campers.

A small camp site that seemed OK to start with but it soon filled up, and we ended up with a very loud family in a caravan with a dog that barked consistly right next to us then they put a generator running a full size fridge feet away form our tent, next time we will look for a bigger site, we cut our stay short.the down side is not really the fault of the wagon and horses that's why I will still give a 5 star rating.the pub was lovely and staff we're lovely and very helpful, the food was wonderful plenty on the plate and a good price. Even though they we're fully booked we found a corner in the bar and had dinner and didn't have to wait long for our meal
