General

Tell the kids they’re going on a seaside holiday and they might even say thanks; give them the lowdown on the golden opps for gilded youths at this park and we suspect they’ll do the washing up for a week beforehand. Unprompted.

First up at the Golden Palm Resort, the biggest privately owned park on the Lincolnshire coast, the small ones can ditch you for the Fun Beach, a dedicated under-14s play area with trained and talented children’s entertainers running comps, discos and shows. (Try not to show too much disappointment as you leave them in safe hands and jet off to the 2000 seat entertainment complex Club Tropicana or to the casino for over-18s only.)

We suspect sprogs will also approve of the heated pool complex’s water slides and separate children’s activity area with water fountains and splash pool for tiddlers – and the crazy golf, and begging for new beachwear at the park shops, and sampling absolutely all the food on site from fish and chips to Chinese takeaway to Sunday roast at the Maid Marian pub….

Then casually let slip the park’s location: Golden Palm Resort is a few minutes away from miles of sandy beach and between more seaside sport at Skegness and Mablethorpe. Perhaps you should negotiate a full two weeks’ worth of washing up.

Local attractions

Coast and countryside are both close to hand from Golden Palm Resort, with Skegness and Mablethorpe about fifteen minutes’ drive away and the Lincolnshire Wolds inland full of chalk hills, valleys, Viking villages and market towns. Ingoldmells is even closer for Fantasy Island and the huge indoor market; Sutton on Sea’s laidback beach with gardens and seafront paddling pool is a few miles away, and Cleethorpes is along the coast to the north.

If you’re tired of the seaside you’re tired of life, goes the quote we’ve just paraphrased, but if it should be the case that a bit of rain falls or you want to get off the beach for a bit, several family options are around these Lincolnshire seaside towns. The Natureland Seal Sanctuary at Skegness should provide a honking great time, as should the National Parrot Sanctuary, Pandas Palace Indoor Play Area and Captain Kids Adventure World; once it dries off a bit drive north to Cleethorpes for the Pleasure Island Theme Park and the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway along the coast.

For grownup concerns, the 18-hole links course at Sandifords between Skegness and Mablethorpe, the racecourse at Market Rasen and the circuit races at Cadwell Park should help to preserve sanity, as will a pootle around the car boot sales at Chapel St Leonards to pick up bargains.

Bards can wander around Somersby, home of poet Alfred Tennyson, or take in part of the 130-mile Tennyson Trail from Louth through Mablethorpe and Skegness; and historians will find highlights all over Lincolnshire, such as the five-sailed mill at Alford, huge Thornton Abbey with its maize maze and summer fruit picking, or taking a day at Lincoln to see the cathedral and eleventh century castle.
