General

  • An eco-friendly campsite
  • Relaxed atmosphere
  • Campfires welcome

Straight up: you'll find lots to like at this lovely little Lincolnshire campsite.

At the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds an easy few miles from the coast at Skeggy and Ingoldmells, Crooked Willow Campsite has been set up by owner Simon to give seaside campers as back-to-nature a holiday as poss: it's a farm campsite that's firmly off-grid, among wild meadows and woodland glades. And – always a direct hit with most types of guest – campfires are allowed and each pitch has its own firepit (Crooked Willow is one of only a few sites on the east coast that lets campers fire up).

The site amenities – shower and toilet facilities and family bathroom with changing area – are in a traditional stable block next to the washing-up area; several freshwater taps are around the site along with a chemical waste disposal point.

And do you like to go back to basics but also be sure of obtaining a curry and a pint when you might fancy? Crooked Willow Campsite is a piffling three-quarters of a mile from Burgh-le-Marsh, where Lincolnshire campers can hunt down refreshments at the restaurant, tearoom, Chinese takeaway, chip shop and – lots to like again – no less than seven local pubs.

Lovely campsite 22/08/2017

What a lovely campsite! We ended up with a pitch nestled in woodland but there were plenty on open grass too with fire pits for all (a must for my Bear Grylls-wannabe husband!). Good, clean shower/toilet facilities and area to wash pots too and the small site meant it was easy to make friends, for us and the children (aged 4 and 7), and feel they were safe running around with torches as night fell. Loved the fact there were fields, trees, plants and wildlife to explore and limited mobile signal so no electronics - children played and explored and weren't bored once! And having clear night skies was wonderful for a family of stargazers. We didn't need to purchase anything while there but the site sells wood/kindling for fires and there is a quaint trailer with kit like kettles and mugs for those in bell tents/glamping pods to hire. The campsite is close to the coast and countryside so you really have the best of both worlds. We visited Gunby Hall (nearby National Trust property) which was lovely; friends went out to Gibraltar Point and the beach. A well located campsite with friendly wardens.

    Disliked:

Shame about the road noise (not the campsite's fault!!) - even though the campsite is away from the main road, it was still audible and made falling asleep tricky for this light sleeper (other half and children had no such issues!

Eco campsite in beautiful location. Plenty of lovely nooks and crannies to pitch your tent in the willows. Firepits are a brilliant idea and really made it nice and cosy to camp in the evening. The facilities were nice and clean and there were compost toilets onsite too. The showers were roomy but there would be pressure on toilets when the showers were being used as the toilets were in the shower rooms.

    Disliked:

Please don't allow large groups to stay at all. A very large family group were staying and were quite noisy and quite rude to some of the other campers.

Local attractions

You've got the pick of the Lincolnshire Wolds and the Lincolnshire coast with a stay at Crooked Willow Campsite – both recommended, obvs...

On the coast, most folk spend time at Skegness and Ingoldmells as a first point of call: Skegness for seaside japes like the pier, Natureland Seal Sanctuary, boating lake and pleasure beach, and Ingoldmells for the theme park Fantasy Island and mammoth indoor market.

Also popular around the coast are the towns of Sutton-on-Sea and Mablethorpe, famed for their hundreds of colourful bathing huts and the sand train at Mablethorpe; go further north to get to the coastal village of Saltfleet and its 200 year old pub.

Woldswise, take yourself off into the walking and cycling trails of the countryside or see some of the Wolds attractions, like the watermill and wildfowl gardens of Claythorpe and the market towns of Louth and Market Rasen. Brought your bike? The Wolds have many excellent motorbiking routes and a tiptop racing circuit at Cadwell Park.

If you're here to nature spot, seeing the seals at Donna Nook should be on your list; more local critters can be observed at the Snipe Dales Nature Reserve, the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve and the straightforwardly excellent Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, running south of Skegness to the Wash.

Must see

  • Sandringham (26.6 miles)
  • Holkham Hall (28.1 miles)
  • Houghton Hall (29.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Gunby Hall (1.7 miles)
  • Gunby Hall Estate: Monksthorpe Chapel (3.1 miles)
