General

  • Award-winning glamping units in the grounds of historic Belvoir Castle
  • A 15-minute drive from Grantham; half an hour from Rutland Water
  • Restaurant and bar with seasonal live music; clay pigeon shooting

Fred's Yurts at the Engine Yard, Belvoir Castle is the place to head for upper-crust stays in gorgeous Leicestershire landscaped grounds. This regal spot is located right there in the grounds of the hilltop castle, a few minutes' drive from the village of Woolsthorpe, the Grantham Canal and the long-distance Viking Way, making it a prime pick for those looking for proper holiday rambles. Country pursuits like clay pigeon shooting can also be indulged in on site, while in high season there's live music to get down to and medieval-style jousting to admire (ask site staff for dates).

The accommodation here is in smart, well-equipped units and includes dog-friendly options – let the Fred's Yurts crew know you're planning on bringing a pet and they'll sort you out with a plush dog bed. High-end soft furnishings and woodburning stoves to keep you cosy as the nights draw in come as standard (baskets of firewood can be bought on site as and when required).

The tents are well spaced out in green surrounds on the edge of the castle's formal gardens, which make a fine backdrop for afternoon strolls. In all, there are nearly 15,000 acres of gorgeous land on the estate, so it’s pretty safe to say that you won't be short of places to stretch your legs.

A cool cocktail bar with both outdoor space and underground cellar seating is a short walk away. There's also a restaurant that prides itself on championing local producers where you can stop for lunch, a morning coffee or other bites.

We absolutely loved the decor inside the bell tent - it looked beautiful when we first opened it up and were blown away. The pretty lamp and fairy lights made it perfect at night, I’ve never felt so cosy in a tent before! Friendliest staff - we felt really safe and made at home. I 100% recommend it to friends and would love to stay again.

The location of the yurts was perfect, the engine yard has everything on hand for the lazy camper and plenty of lovely walks as soon as you step out. The freedom that the site provided was great and my children loved the goats in the field next to us so would often wonder off to feed them.
The yurt was perfect and so comfy and cosy. We would love to return next summer

The bell tent was very nice. Very soft memory foam mattress on top of proper bed slats. Parking was close to the tents so no long treks with stuff from car to tent.
Lockable tent, I suggest taking your own padlock if you do want to lock it but it is not really necessary.
Solar powered battery for charging phones (only works if sunny so I recommend taking your own portable chargers)
Fairy lights made the inside homely and inviting.
    Beautiful views

How lovely the yurts were. The wood burners kept us lovely and toasty. Amber was onsite and very helpful with anything needed. The Engine Yard as a little community was very vibrant and a great setting for the yurts. The on-site restaurant, the Fuel Tank, was great and the staff were FABULOUS. Would definitely go back.

    Disliked:

The only thing I’d change was that the water temperature of the on-site shower couldn’t be changed and it was scalding hot. It meant my daughter couldn’t have a proper wash whilst we were there. I just about managed. The tap in the temporary toilets was the same too! My hands were red raw after three days.
