  • Nearly-wild campsite on a private estate in Leicestershire
  • Ten minutes’ drive to Download Festival at Donington Park
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; pubs and shops 25 minutes’ walk
Heading to Download? Liking the sound of somewhere unusual – and peaceful – to lay down your head in between bands, far away from the festival crowds? Consider camping at Whatton House, a Georgian mansion set on an extensive private estate 20 minutes’ drive from Loughborough. The pop-up site’s limited number of nearly wild grass pitches all have spectacular views over the Leicestershire countryside, with simple amenities including portable toilets, shower facilities and phone charging points. Free transport to and from the festival action at Donington Park (10 minutes’ drive) is all laid on too. If you’re intending to go down the self-catering route, you can pick up supplies from the convenience store or organic farm shop in Long Whatton (five minutes’ drive or 25 minutes’ walk). You might be more inspired to walk when you learn that the village has two pubs, so you can make a night of it before heading back to your tent for a decent night’s sleep.

Local attractions

Whatton House is within easy reach of major transport hubs like East Midlands Airport (10 minutes’ drive) if you’re coming to Download from overseas, and East Midlands Parkway railway station (15 minutes). The campsite is also 15 minutes’ drive from Junction 24 of the MI motorway. Should you have time to spare from the full roster of bands at Download Festival, you might like to take a stroll around the 15-acre gardens at Whatton House, laid out in the late 19th century. Other inspiring gardens are found at Melbourne Hall and National Trust-owned Calke Abbey (both 20 minutes). If you’ve got the kids with you and you’re looking for a break from the festival hurly burly, they might like to see rare albino peacocks and follow the dinosaur trail at Manor Farm Park and Woodlands (15 minutes). Alternatively, you can all let off steam by having a bounce around at Jump Giants Loughborough Trampoline Park (25 minutes).
