General

  • Peaceful wild camping within the Battle of Bosworth map area
  • Seven-acre field with fishery next door and Ashby canal walks nearby
  • Well-stocked farm shop: buy barbecue packs and home-produced meat

Tomlinson's Farm Shop and Campsite is on the edge of the pretty village of Stoke Golding within easy walking distance of the centre of the village, and has excellent access to a seven-acre field.

The site is quiet and peaceful - best suited to those who want a wild camping camping experience - and welcomes individual or group bookings looking for a break. Families are also welcome. The site has a lockable gate making it safe for kids and dogs. It's a working farm, so pigs and poultry can be seen.

The open, spacious field is a top spot for back-to-basics camping, in a scenic, peaceful and relaxing setting. The owners are campfire- and barbecue-friendly too, so trot along to the farm shop, established for 10 years, to buy barbecue packs,
home-produced meat, local bread, milk and more.

Stoke Golding has three pubs all serving food; one has an Indian restaurant within it too and will deliver takeaways.

The site has a portaloo.

Large flat and well drained field, with a portaloo which is very handy.
Total choice of where you want to go and a good example of 'pitch up where you want and get on undisturbed' camping.
Friendly owners, with a laid back approach which is nice. A more old school approach to camping I'd say.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately I have to echo some complaints about noisy groups and barking dogs. I want to be honest with it as having just these two issues resolved would turn a good site into a great one.

I booked three nights. Initially very pleased with the site due to the above 'liked' items. The area is lovely with plenty of nice walks and loads to do within a short walk. However on day one, some local Dogs were barking all day and up until at least 1am. You can sort of ignore them in the day with things going on, but night time was a bit annoying. I do accept that this is probably beyond the owners control though, and is not a deal breaker for me.

The deal breaker came on night number two when a large group of men turned up with several tents, a gazeebo, and a ghetto blaster. They started drinking early, playing a very sweary and shouty version of cricket and playing loud music until at around 2.30 am. I felt uncomfortable for the campervan owners that turned up with young kids that day, having to absorb the almost constant swearing.
I spent most of day two on edge having to listen to all this and I ended up not staying for night number three and just went home as I was shattered. I should have visited the owner but was just too tired and moody to be able to complain effectively.

With this kind of site that welcomes all, you do take a chance, and it is cheap but I would have to put it to the owner that for me at least, this potential, regular site to stay at (as i do like the basic/wild camping, peaceful experience), has been struck from my list. It was also disappointing having read a previous similar review with the owner responding that the noisy group issue was being dealt with (this partly was responsible for me booking in the first place). If you're lucky enough to not get a noisy group, and like back to basics camping, you could have a lovely time here.

From the manager...

Hi James, I'm so sorry your stay was not as good as you anticipated. You are right that the barking dogs are out of our control, I'd be interested to know whereabouts in the field you were camping to work out where the barking was coming from. Also the dates that you stayed, I've looked for a booking under your name but it's not coming up. If it was this last weekend, it was very busy due to the bank holiday and is generally much quieter. It's annoying when a group is inconsiderate to other campers but because we are not in the field it's hard to supervise. We had friends in a caravan keeping an eye this last weekend and they said it was quiet in the evening's but I appreciate it depends where you are pitched. If you can let me have your booking details i will gladly refund you for your stay. We obviously do operate the camping to make money but providing quality to each and every one of our customers does go hand in hand with this and I'm always upset when we don't achieve this so please accept our heartfelt apology.
Kind Regards
Jo Tomlinson

Lovely field and a lovely location. We were pleased to see that the field was huge with plenty space to spread out and have privacy and also for the children and dogs to play. The website said the bookings were full so i assume we saw it at full capacity and it was not crowded so it was very pleasant. The grass was all clean and dry and the ground was easy to pitch on. There were no troublesome insects which was great too. There are 4 portaloos which was plenty as there was never a queue. they did end up overfull but not grubby. We brought plenty of our own water. Fellow campers were friendly. There was a short stroll to the village and a canal walk on the doorstep. Fab that we could have campfires and there was plenty wood around to salvage. Eggs from the farm shop were delicious and the owners were lovely people.

    Disliked:

It was disappointing to see that all but one of our neighbors left their rubbish behind. What they think is going to happen to it I don't know. There is a sign saying to take your rubbish with you. Perhaps some instructions for the closest recycling/rubbish disposal site would encourage more campers to take their black bags with them. I felt sorry for the owners who must have to clear up after them. There was distant barking from the nearby kennels but don't let reviews put you off as it was in no way loud or disturbing or persistent. There were two noisy groups in the field while we stayed but the noise was not very late and why shouldn't they relax and have fun... They did not spoil anything just because they were louder than others. The porta loos were clean the whole time even when full up. Perhaps they need one more or maybe its just the extra night being bank hol weekend that made them overfill.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review we are very glad you enjoyed camping here. This is a relatively new venture for us and your feedback is invaluable to us. It was hard to estimate the number of toilets required, particularly as bookings come in at the last minute. In hindsight one extra would have been perfect. Regarding rubbish, yes this is a problem. No matter how nicely we ask people still leave it. I am investigating how much it would cost to have 2 of the large bins on wheels for bottles, cans and general waste, for next year. Thanks again for your review.
