  • Family-friendly Hertfordshire touring site near Waltham Cross
  • A 35-minute drive to Warner Bros. Studio Tour for Harry Potter fans
  • Easy access from the M25 and close to London train services
The words ‘camping’ and ‘London’ don't often go together – so when you find a site that manages both it’s well worth taking a look. Just to the north of the capital, Theobalds Park is in a handy Hertfordshire spot that gives you all the greenery and fresh air of a countryside campsite plus easy access to central London for days out. The hardstanding touring pitches here are set in lovely woodland surroundings with open grass areas and plenty of space to relax in the open air. Dogs and kids are welcome, with a play area provided for the latter (and a launderette for any muddy mishaps they may have). A motorhome service point is provided, along with toilets and showers (including wheelchair-accessible facilities). Getting here should be nice and straightforward, as the location is very close to Junction 25 of the M25, where the orbital meets the A10. It’s just outside the town of Waltham Cross, putting it within easy reach of shops and places to eat (you’ll be allowed a barbecue on site, by the way, so pack yours if you fancy some alfresco cooking). The town’s railway station is a very useful facility as well, with services taking you into central London in about half an hour. Not that it’s all about city day trips when you stay here though – being in the outskirts means you’ll also be able to plan outdoor activities like walks, fishing and birdwatching or opt for some of outer London’s attractions like the Natural History Museum at Tring or the popular Warner Bros. Studio Tour.

Local attractions

London has to be the big attraction, of course – hop on the train for half an hour and you’ll be right there in one of the world's great cities. The list of things to do is almost endless – first-timers will definitely want to see landmarks like Big Ben, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace but there are heaps of interesting things around for all ages and tastes. If you don’t fancy the crowds of central London, take a look at local options – perhaps wandering in the gardens at Forty Hall Estate (five minutes' drive), meeting the animals at Willows Activity Farm (20 minutes) or exploring the eclectic exhibits at the Natural History Museum at Tring (45 minutes). Fans of a certain boy wizard will surely be delighted with the Warner Bros. Studio Tour (35 minutes) too. Fancy some outdoor time? Head to Lee Valley Country Park (10 minutes) for walks, fishing, birdwatching and cycling, or adrenaline activities at the Lee Valley White Water Centre. Epping Forest (15 minutes) is another good option for a long walk or bike ride.
