Camping under the trees
Quiet rural camping just 12 miles from central london
100 aker wood area of the park
Our pitch in the avenues field

  • Large peaceful parkland site 12 miles from central London
  • Café, playgrounds and barbecue rental
  • Activities on site including nature walks and animal feeding
City slickers – if you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, it's likely that you'll find the setting of Elstree's Aldenham Country Park magic. The wild camping pitches at this peaceful park are less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another excellent aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a great option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.) Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks and animal feeding among the activities for guests. Kids can also search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include cycle rides on woodland trails. The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

What customers say

This is a spacious, well-located campsite praised for its friendly and helpful staff. Visitors appreciate the natural setting, ample room to choose pitches, and the option for campfires. The adventure playground and farm are popular with children. While facilities are generally seen as basic but clean, some guests found the portaloos and limited showers/sinks less than ideal, particularly when busy. The site is considered good value, offering easy access to London.

Liked Great location, dog friendly (although not everyone keeps them on leads which was annoying!) and LOADS to do for young kids the perfect site for little ones first making adventures

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review, I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your camping trip with us. One of our rules are that all dogs must be kept on leads, so am sorry to hear not everyone was following this. I will make sure to share this with the team so everyone is keeping an extra look out for anyone not following this rule.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Visited with my 2 kids 1 & 3, great open space for them to run around and very little car movement around the field.
I’m not sure there was much free stuff to do onsite for the kids so you would have to go off site.
There is an airfield 5 minutes down the road that has a little cafe where you can sit and watch the plane move and take off.

It’s about a 10 - 15 minute walk to the farm which we visited everyday and they sell local produce, I was tempted to get some but had no where to store it.
There is a lake you can walk around but we didn’t managed to do it.

Toilets are not as bad as people make out, they were cleaned regularly but not sure they were emptied during out stay.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The location was nice

Disliked Very loud, people shouting and playing music past 10pm. Had to call security got so loud, would expect them to be more on it.
Additional charge for firepit is unnecessary. Acceptable for wood, but no where else charges you for the ‘right’ to have a fire.
Toilet facilities are portaloos which are not clean.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review, it is helpful to get feedback from customers so that we can constantly improve.
We do have a strict rule of no noise after 10pm, which is one of the reasons why we have security onsite to control this. Security keep an eye on the campsite and our cabins up near our car park, so they may have been in the other direction and is why we provide you with the contact number. I will make sure to pass this on to our security team so that we can ensure this is being stopped straight away.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked have been so excited to write this review and give the campsite and staff the incredible praise it and they deserve!

My wife and I arrived on Friday morning after travelling down from Manchester. We had originally booked a two night stay as we were attending the Coldplay concert on Friday. Upon arrival, staff were super polite, friendly and smiley! We pitched our tent and made ourselves comfortable. We then headed to the concert, had a fabulous evening and returned to the site afterwards and headed to bed.

On Saturday we decided a chilled day was in order, so we headed to the cafe on site for some breakfast. Delicious food, friendly staff and a beautiful outdoor seating area. In the afternoon, we headed off site to “The Lost Jungle” which was a really cool outdoor crazy golf course. It was about a ten minute drive away from the site and really reasonably priced. We sat outside our tent on Saturday evening and watched families play football, rounders and relax by their campfires. The atmosphere on the site was lovely, and although it was quite busy, everyone was very respectful and most people headed inside for 10pm.

On Sunday when we woke up, we were not ready to leave! We spoke to a staff member and luckily, they were able to squeeze us in for another night! We were so grateful as it was bank holiday Sunday and the site was still quite busy. We purchased firewood and made a fire and once again, spent a lovely evening relaxing and cooking.

We had beautiful views of the sunset and sunrise each evening and morning. The surrounding walks are beautiful and there is so much to do around the park.

As two thirty something year olds, we didn’t feel out of place playing football, bat and ball and badminton every evening! Every person we spoke to was friendly and welcoming.

Do not be put off by the portloo toilets - the staff are fantastic and were at the toilets every hour replenishing toilet paper and cleaning up. The showers were hot and powerful and more than fine for a few nights stay.

We are seasoned campers and have been to so many different places and sites, but this one really was something special. The atmosphere every single day was so lovely and we got very lucky with the bank holiday sunshine! We would recommend this site to anyone! Perfect for couples, families and even larger groups. We will one million percent be back! Thank you!
