A classic visitor

  • Spacious pitches on an airfield 15 minutes’ drive from Leominster
  • Berrington Hall 20 minutes’ drive; Shropshire Hills 45 minutes
  • Front-row views of aircraft landing and taking off; dog-walking field
Looking up to the sky is a bit of a must when you stay at Shobdon Airfield Caravan Park. A landing ground during World War II, this site in the spectacular Herefordshire countryside is now in the capable hands of the local aero club, who runs it as a working airfield. The club has also opened it up to visitors. And, luckily for aviation enthusiasts and plane spotters, the staff are always available to show you around the aircraft. Hardstanding pitches are few and spacious (surely the best combo?), and the site also has electric hook-up, a toilet/shower block, a launderette and waste-disposal points. And with a dog-walking field on site, you also know that your four-legged friend is welcome. (You are, however, requested to keep it on a lead while on site.) There are planes coming and going most days here, but don’t worry: the action stops at 5pm, so your sleep won’t be affected. Instead of the gentle buzz of light aircraft, you’ll be lulled to sleep by hooting owls and other natural sounds. The award-winning on-site café serves epic all-day breakfasts, Sunday roasts and simple meals like jacket potatoes and homemade pies. If you fancy a spot of self-catering, the nearest convenience store is in Pembridge (five minutes’ drive), while Leominster (15 minutes) has several supermarkets and assorted dining options. For a cheeky pint between plane-spotting sessions, head to Shobdon village, a mile away (five minutes, or a 25-minute stroll).

Local attractions

Take a break from the low hum of aircraft engines and seek peace and quiet at the Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (10 minutes’ drive). Stroll along grassy paths or through the wildflower meadows, stopping to admire the Monet-style bridge at the lily pond, or the various follies scattered around the site. National Trust properties in the vicinity include Croft Castle and Parkland (10 minutes) and Berrington Hall (20 minutes). The former is a centuries-old manor house with imposing crenellated turrets and expansive woodland. Berrington Hall dates from the Georgian era and has a garden designed by Capability Brown. Hikers might have to throw a coin to decide which national landscape area to explore on a given day. The Shropshire Hills National Landscape is the closest (45 minutes), but the Malvern Hills National Landscape and Wye Valley National Landscape are only a little further (an hour). Alternatively, cross the border into Wales and tackle the hills of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacon) (55 minutes).
