Cozy bell tent (four person, superior)

Liked: Very tranquil, bell tents beautifully furnished and comfortable

Disliked: Needs washing up facilities. Also tents have little solar powered lights beaming around the bottom of the tent when it goes dark which is aesthetically pleasing from the exterior but not ideal when trying to put young children to bed!

Non-electric grass pitch (large, mountain view, riverside)

Liked: Stunning location, lovely campsite.

Disliked: Showers on the cold side! But good for the circulation so probably for the best on balance!

Non-electric grass pitch (large, mountain view, riverside)

Liked: Delightfully well-mown grass Level pitch even so close to the hills! Beautiful scenery, access to the hills and sun all day long Really friendly, lovely and accommodating campsite owner John

Disliked: That we had to go home! Somewhere to wash up would be handy if possible

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Everything! The location is beautiful, the site is absolutely pristine and the grass is immaculately well kept. John couldn’t be a better host, he is friendly and approachable and has a wealth of local knowledge. Located on a working farm away from any major roads the Cayo Retreat is peaceful and has beautiful views of the black mountains. Shower and toilet facilities are modern and spotlessly clean. There is no shop on site but the pleasant village of Longtown is a short walk (approx 15 mins) where you will find a small grocery store and a pub. Longtown Castle is also a short walk away. If you are reading this review looking to visit this area then you will not find a better site than this or a more accommodating host.

Disliked: I have nothing to dislike about this location - it’s a sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world!

Non-electric grass pitch (large, mountain view, riverside)

Liked: We had such a wonderful time. A quit place, wonderful view and very welcoming host. We really enjoyed the river, the mountain and all the fresh air that gave us a lot of energy to keep on with our busy lives. My husband even had a trip up to the top of the mountain. Hope to come again soon!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful campsite with amazing views, 10 minute walk to a pub. Bathrooms (including showers) were clean and very new. The best thing about the place was John, the host. Amazingly friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

Disliked: Nothing really, although if it gets more popular, they made need to get some more bathrooms.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The site was beautiful. John was amazing, such a lovely host and honestly couldn't have been more helpful. Would recommend to everyone.

Disliked: Only teeny thing was there being no specific facilities for washing up. BUT there was a tap you could use and John was fully aware that he needed to put something in and was planning to do it asap

Local attractions

The site’s not just well set up for ramblers… Other energetic types will be best pleased by how close National Cycle Route 42 is (just a 15-minute drive, or 30-minute cycle), and those who like to get up close with the local(ish) wildlife have only a 15-minute drive to source llama trekking. People craving high-octane adventures can opt instead for the mountain adventure centre 10 minutes away, which covers lots of different bases: guests can get competitive on the paintball field, get adrenaline pumping on the quads, hovercrafts or rally karts, test mettle on the assault course or try out marksmanship with some clay pigeon shooting. Anyone after a more laidback hol should maybe follow in historical footsteps instead: get a feel for the industry of this part of the UK at Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit National Coal Museums, both about 40 minutes away, or mosey around the ruins at Skenfrith Castle 35 minutes from base. Prefer some urban days? Head to Abergavenny – known hereabouts as a ‘gateway to Wales’ – 25 minutes from the site for indie shops and foodie stops, or Hay-on-Wye 35 minutes away for leafing through nearly two dozen bookshops.
