General

  • Traditional country pub and restaurant near Hay-on-Wye
  • Open fireplace, gardens and beer garden with spectacular views
  • Set in the Golden Valley surrounded by the Merbach Hills

If you were staying at country pub site The Castlefields, in the village of Clifford in Herefordshire, you'd very likely want to wander the four miles to Hay-on-Wye on your first morn and then return, book-laden, to this traditional pub and restaurant to set up camp for several hours...?

And you might want to occasionally wander outside to drink in the views too: The Castlefields is in a sightly setting in the Black Mountains's Golden Valley and surrounded by the Merbach Hills.

The pub and restaurant is a family-run independent freehouse in a sixteenth-century former coach house, fully renovated and updated by owners Carol and Ian to include a comfy and welcoming restaurant with an open fire, an adjacent and also-cosy bar, environmentally friendly lighting and a 38-foot well unearthed during the refurbishment. Extensive gardens, a beer garden, parking facilities and a rain water harvester are outside.

But let's talk vittles and tipples. The Castlefield's restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday inclusive and serves eminently good home-cooked food made fresh using fine local produce, from a seasonal menu, daily specials board, snack menu and children’s menu. An eminently good selection of fine beers, real ales, wines and spirits is also on tap.

Amenities are sorted in the modern shower block, which also has washing machines, dryers and a washing-up area.

Small site on a quiet ' B ' road. Little or no traffic noise at night. The Castlefields pub and restaurant is excellent. Real ale and a very wide choice of good quality food on the menu. Sunday lunch is very good value for money. Try and depart Monday as you will need a snooze after lunch !! Carol and Ian are tremendous hosts.

Toilets have plenty of hot water and the shower cubicle design is the best we have used. Large changing area that does not get wet - a good seat and plenty of hooks

The scenery is spectacular. Plenty places to visit

For families The Castlefields does have a Children's play area.

    Disliked:

NOT really dislikes - just comments. This is an agricultural area and there is constant tractor traffic in the daytime. There can be flocks of sheep close by.

The toilet facilities are very good - laundry and washing up all inside and heated. However the ladies and gents do only provide one WC. Queuing may be an issue when the site is busy. Potential users need to be aware of the Hay Festival. Carol and Ian say they are very busy.

Only three stars for Wi -Fi. Carol admits it is intermittent and slow. It is free.

    Nothing to dislike

    Disliked:

Only one on Site male and female toilet / shower so have to queue at busy periods

From the manager...

Thank you for your review I was a little suprised at the dislike comment as there were only yourself and 2 other caravans and would find it hard that you would have to queue. There is also a 3rd shower which is unisex next to the ladies.

The site was really nice, everyone there was really friendly and helpful. This was our first time taking our caravan away and we couldn't of picked a better site, we pulled up on site and a lovely couple came over to help us move the caravan into the pitch. There's hard standing and grass pitches we had hard standing. The toilets and showers are really clean, there is a laundrette but we didn't use it. The site is really clean and tidy. I can't rate this site enough it was amazing. The pub and restaurant was amazing the food was beautiful it wasn't expensive either we did have to book our table but that was understandable as the pub and restaurant is popular, we stayed for 3 nights and we had food in the restaurant all 3 nights. The staff are very friendly, helpful and polite we really couldn't of asked for a better first caravan holiday. Will definitely be recommending and will DEFINITELY be going back next year

    Great countryside
Pub on hand with good, cheap, basic pub food (huge quantities, very tasty!)
Not too big a site (about 7 hardstandings plus some tent areas)
    Easy to get to.
    Quiet site....hardly any road noise.
Very modern loos and excellent showers.

    Disliked:

Loo, shower block not cleaned every day whilst we were there.
Pub closed on Mondays and (Pitchup note) Tuesdays.

From the manager...

Local attractions

The Castlefields is niftily set for well-known walks in its surrounding countryside, like the Wye Valley Walk running 136 miles along the river and through the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's also local to Wye fishing and to Offa's Dyke for another hike, all in highly scenic surrounds.

Hay-on-Wye's many bookshops are four miles from base; if you're in town on a Thursday check out the farmer's market and if you're in there in early June trot along to the world famed Hay Festival.

Very active types – you might want to exercise off all the Castlefields tipples and vittles – can wend their way to the Brecon Beacons about 20 miles away and have a go at climbing Pen-Y-Fan, the highest peak in south Wales, or, somewhat less actively, take in some local horse riding, canoeing or cycling.

Must see

  • Blaenavon Ironworks (22.5 miles)
