  • Quiet, scenic farm site on the banks of the River Wye
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and the Brecon Beacons
  • Canoe landing on the river; firepits and wood available on site
From climbing summits in the Brecon Beacons to dallying around a literary town or paddleboarding along the River Wye, you’ll be in a good position to while away your time however you please from Locksters Pool Camping. On the banks of the River Wye itself, this family-run site is 10 minutes’ drive away from the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park or Hay-on-Wye and it’s nicely geared up for couples, small groups and anyone keen on wildlife. There’s kayak and canoe hire down in Hay-on-Wye but the site also has its very own canoe landing that guests are welcome to use. The riverbank makes a rather lovely spot for a wander, whether to admire the sunset in the evening or just to take in the views by day. As you might expect, the river also attracts wildlife, so perhaps you’ll want to pack your binoculars and get a-spotting. And how about winding down in those evening times? Well, firepits and wood are available on site. You’ll also have access to other convenient facilities including portable toilets and dishwashing facilities (handy after a bit of cooking over the fire). Those of you who are looking to build a reliable stash of snacks to nibble on while you’re out will be happy to find shops in Hay-on-Wye, including a butchers and farm shop. Perhaps you might have your mind on a meal out somewhere nice, too – handily, there are lots of restaurants, cafés and pubs in the town too, including riverside spots.

Local attractions

Would you prefer a cycle, canoe or kayak? You’ll have the choice of all three in Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes’ drive), where the river’s all alive with watersports, the streets with bookshops and the surrounding hills with cycling trails, including Gospel Pass on Wales’ tallest road. While you’re on an active streak, there are a few other places that will deliver on that front, from the ancient woodland and river walks around Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (25 minutes) and the waterfall hike at Water Break-Its-Neck (40 minutes) to hiking and mountain biking on Black Mountain (half an hour). Over at Llangorse Lake and the Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (35 minutes), there's everything from horse riding and mountain biking to watersports and climbing too. When you’re ready to take things at a slightly slower pace, that’s okay, as it’s all about the city streets, cider museum, Gothic cathedral and old buildings around Hereford (40 minutes). It’s fairly laidback at the National Trust’s Croft Castle and Parkland (40 minutes) and while activities with the little animals in Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (25 minutes) might make the kids a little excited, watching the owls is quite a way to unwind.
