  • Scenic setting in the Forest of Dean, 5 miles from Symonds Yat Rock
  • Orienteering course on site; miles of paths and bike trails close by
  • Bar, restaurant, kitchen, lounge, firepit and canoe landing station
Might you think a youth hostel site is somewhat… basic? That’s def not the case at the Forest of Dean site of YHA Wye Valley: it’s so well kitted out it has its own canoe landing station. That and several other little factors make this a spectacular spot for activity breaks and school trips: first up there’s the forest setting five miles from Symonds Yat Rock and among miles of footpaths and bike trails for budget adventure breaks… then there’s the orienteering course right on site, and a fully-equipped self-catering kitchen as well as a guest lounge to totter back to afterwards… (And a restaurant for those not inclined to cook, and a licensed bar, for those not on school trips.) If you’d rather grill up supper over flames, a designated firepit/barbecue area is on site for guests’ use and local town Ross-on-Wye is within 15 minutes for supplies. Firewood is easy to forage as it’s on sale at reception; the site team asks that guests don’t use wood from nearby trees/woodland as these are on private grounds. All guests have access to hostel amenities including a water supply, toilets and showers: the male and female WC blocks are in the main courtyard.

Local attractions

This is in stellar setting for adventures around the Forest of Dean and Herefordshire, whether you want to get out and about canoeing, climbing, cycling and hiking, or spend days at local attractions like Goodrich Castle or Clearwell Caves. For the first set of options, leaf through the local info available at the hostel or ask the Wye Valley team for their tips. A must-do for active types around here include the famed climbing routes at Symonds Rock – available for novices and experts, and ending with fab views of the Forest of Dean, the Black Mountains and the River Wye; local providers can show you the ropes if you’ve never climbed before. (For climbing of a different sort, Go Ape is 25 minutes’ drive away.) Start at Goodrich Castle five minutes’ drive from the hostel for your first foray into the forest’s local attractions, then take your pick from fluttering around the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo 10 minutes’ drive away; making your way – with luck – out of the aMazing Hedge Puzzle (10 minutes); more pondering at Puzzlewood (20 minutes); subterranean wanders at Clearwell Caves (25 minutes), and finding out all about it at the Dean Heritage Centre, 30 minutes away.
