Huntsham Bridge Camping: Picnic beside the river

General

  • Riverside site in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A five-minute drive to Symonds Yat Rock, and 10 minutes to Ross-n-Wye
  • Grass pitches on the Wye river, close to watersports, pubs and shops

Huntsham Bridge Camping offers grassy pitches in level fields on the banks of the Wye river in Herefordshire – a spectacular spot for exploring the untamed Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. This peaceful, off-grid site is heaven for all sporting types, with options for canoeing, kayaking, cycling, climbing and walking in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Try to get up early at least one morning to watch the sun rise from the viewpoint at Symonds Yat Rock, and you might like to tour the ramparts and exhibitions at medieval Goodrich Castle (both five minutes’ drive).

Firepits can be hired and wood can be bought (subject to availability) on site – the owners can also provide bricks so disposable barbecues don’t burn the grass. You can source goodies for the grill in Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth (both 10 minutes), and while you’re there, have a potter around their indie shops and galleries. If you’re off cooking duty (you are on holiday, after all), there are plenty of pubs, tea shops and takeaways in both towns as well.

Simple on-site amenities include a portable toilet and a shower, and you can park by your pitch, so you won’t have to traipse across the field with your camping gear.

A couple of rules to end up on: the owners want you to enjoy the wonderful Wye Valley dark skies, so please use torches or lights just bright enough to get you around the campsite safely. This is a quiet site too; no noise after 10pm so your fellow guests can have an undisturbed night.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Touring caravans, motorhomes and campervans with the door built on the left-hand side are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Units longer than 5 metres are not allowed.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

We liked everything about this holiday. The owners were very welcoming and nice and the facilities kept clean. The pitches were level with plenty of space. It was great being close to the river wye and having a day out canoeing with the center only 3 minutes drive away.

Beautiful site, not many pitches - low-key, just how we like it! Lovely setting right by the river, next to a row of poplar trees which are a good reference point when walking in the local area! Short walk across farm fields to a good pub. Very near all the local attractions. Hot shower! Breakfast rolls to your tent!

    Disliked:

Despite it feeling nice and secluded, the bridge does get a fair few cars crossing which you can hear from the campsite. Didn't bother us!

Fantastic little site, well kept, with superb views across the Wye and access to Symonds Yat. Very welcoming owners, flexible in approach and keen to see their site enjoyed by all. Lovely to use fire pit and wake up to breakfast rolls!

    Disliked:

Pitches are close (but not small), noise does travel, larger groups should be conscious of being ready for earlier and quieter nights.
