  • Peaceful site on a dog-friendly working farm in rural Herefordshire
  • A 20-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye; 35 minutes from Hereford
  • Bell tents with gorgeous views over the Golden Valley
Simple pleasures, stunning scenery and great swathes of space are all on the menu at Upper House Farm, a peaceful Herefordshire spot above a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Peterchurch (a tiny village but one that’s big enough to have its own convenience store for provisions). The bell tents at this family farm come with access to toilets and showers, and each unit has a decking area, firepit, outdoor cooking facilities and a comfy bed. They’ve also got gorgeous views out over the Golden Valley – splendid at any time of day but perhaps at their best come sunset hour. The glamping area only accommodates a small number of guests, so it never feels crowded, and kids can run about without tripping over other people. Beyond the bell tents are a fab 100 acres of farm estate that you’re welcome to wander around. With dog-friendly accommodation and walking trails all around (dogs to be kept on a lead when on site), this is a fine spot for travelling canines too. And beyond that… well, there’s much more to explore, with lots of local footpaths crossing the valleys, local hiking up the Hay Bluff and Black Mountain and the whole of the Brecon Beacons National Park just past those peaks. Hay-on-Wye and the river’s canoe trips are about 20 minutes’ drive away too.

Texel bell tent (hot tub)

Liked: This was our first glamping trip, we wanted something peaceful as a break away from reality (children) 😂 we were on a budget so originally booked the cheapest we could find so didn’t expect much! Boy were we surprised everything about this site is amazing, outstanding views, cleanliness is top standard and the tipi we stayed in was set up so well with everything we could need. The bed was so comfy and the hot tub was to die for 🥰 quick response from the owner when we needed anything. Dog friendly our pup Nelly absolutely loved wildlife watching and lounging about in the grass! Would 100% recommend👌 if you don’t book your missing out!

Disliked: The only thing we disliked was leaving :(

Local attractions

A popular day out here is to hop over the border into Wales to explore the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes’ drive) and maybe take a canoe trip along the river. While you’re over that way you could also hike up Hay Bluff (half an hour) or the Black Mountain (40 minutes). If that’s given you a taste for uphill challenges, try the big one at Pen y Fan (an hour) – it’s the highest peak in south Wales but the paths make it relatively accessible. In fact, the Welsh side of the border has plenty of ways to keep you busy, whether you fancy a paddle from the shingle beach in Glasbury (half an hour), a step into the past at Raglan Castle (45 minutes) and Goodrich Castle (50 minutes) or some watersports at Llangorse Lake (45 minutes). The Big Pit National Coal Museum (50 minutes) is a good spot for learning about days gone by, too. Back over in England, there are gorgeous gardens to explore in the grounds of Brobury House (20 minutes) and much to see and do in Hereford (35 minutes), including the Mappa Mundi exhibition and Black and White House Museum.
