  • Family- and dog-friendly pub site a mile from Leominster on the A44
  • A 20-minute drive from Ludlow; 25 minutes from Hereford
  • Home-cooked meals, play area and 24-hour access to facilities
If you’re the type who loves the outdoors but is also rather fond of finishing a day out with a good feed and a proper pint, then it’s likely you’ll do rather well indeed at Barons Cross Inn. This welcoming pub site is in a highly handy Herefordshire location, a mile outside of Leominster on the A44 and sitting in a sweet spot in the middle of a triangle that has the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and the Brecon Beacons at its points. All of that means heaps of walks to be had in the vicinity along with pretty villages to potter around (some of the best are linked on the nearby Black & White Trail driving route). Whatever you choose to do by day, you’ll surely be keen to get back to the pub, where the chef preps meals made with locally sourced ingredients (but kept at pub prices) and there’s a tempting collection of beers, ciders and wines. There's often something going on, such as quiz nights or live music, and everyone is made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. Restless kids and dogs can be sorted at the play area and the neighbouring field respectively, and there’s also free wifi for quieter times. Guests have 24-hour access to the pub’s toilets and shower room, along with washing-up facilities. Breakfasts are available on request on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and you’re welcome to light up a barbecue if you fancy doing your own cooking (there’s a supermarket five minutes’ walk away and a bus stop just outside the pub for easy access to shops and other amenities in town).

Local attractions

Start with a little stroll around Leominster, a mile away – it’s a handsome market town with a grand priory and streets lined with independent shops to poke around in. For more active times, it’s also got a swimming pool and a golf course (about 10 minutes’ drive from the pub). If you’d like to take your urban wanders a little further, check out the foodies’ fave Ludlow (20 minutes’ drive) or head into Hereford (25 minutes) to see the cathedral, the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Hereford Cider Museum. Keeping it all a little more country, venture to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes) to get up close to the animals, wander through Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (15 minutes) or learn a little bit about cheesemaking at Monkland Cheese Dairy (five minutes). If you’re heading out for a hike, the Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills and Brecon Beacons are all within 40 minutes’ drive.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: nothing

Disliked: Field was unkempt, building type rubbish and general detritus around the fences and edges of the field, not dog friendly as advertised. Pub is old and dilapidated. The impression given in the advertising is surrounded by countryside - not true, it’s on a main road through a housing estate. There is not a restaurant, food can be ordered, it’s all fried / microwaved and not of good quality. In all a poor situation, we decided to leave on the Saturday and give up the 2 nights.

Liked: Very nice area. Easy walk to the little town of Leominster. The hosts are absolutely lovely nothings to much trouble. It just needs better facilities but that is something they are working on.

Disliked: There is quite a lot of road noise.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: After reading previous reviews i was sceptical, but the place wasnt as bad as i thought, yes it was basic but what do you expect for the price. Toilets were basic but clean, the pitch was well kept and clean.

Disliked: No one there to greet you, could of done with a sign saying you pick your own pitch.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff, the warm welcome. I messaged Floyd before to ask if we could bring dogs in to the pub. He was prompt in replying, funny and polite. Dogs are allowed in the back bar. This place has got so much potential and Floyd and staff have achieved alot since May. We had the best weekend! Nice walk into little town and handy for Morrisons.

Disliked: Not disliked but pub/campsite needs website with menu on it .

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Not much to like I'm afraid. However! This could be an excellent site but, it needs a good influx of cash and an adventurous imagination.

Disliked: When arrived, the pub was not open. After waiting for a short while someone came, advised us, we could pick a pitch and that the electric hook up should be working. Due to the fact I'm on 12 hours of oxygen, my machine needs to be plugged in, to recharge. At this point I was worried and upset. Luckily the first one worked. The toilet and shower facilities are those used by the pub. They had left them open although the pub was shut. I must mention though that the shower was 'out of order' The pub is shut Monday and Tuesday and they only serve food Thursday's to Sundays. I really hate to moan. This site has so much potential and I am aware the new owners only took it over in May. I think possibly, it would have been better to get the site up and running together with the pub, before opening. We left the next day even though we paid for three nights. I have NEVER done that before. I do apologise now to the owners. I will definitely keep an eye out for Barons Cross, track its progress and we may very well book again, once, facilities are upgraded and fully functional. Keep at it 👍.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Check in time 12 Check out time 12 A few extra hours makes an enormous difference when only staying for one night. The kids play area The friendliness of the owner

Disliked: The quality of our pitch was awful. Full of thistles, uneven, messy. The shower was awful. It ended up being closed because the small crack in the tray became bigger and bigger until it just became broken and unusable. They ran out of loo-roll. The bin area was not equipped for the size of the site. There was only one person running a campsite, pub and restaurant, so nothing was being done properly and I’m amazed he was managing as well as he was. I imagine the owner was trying to get as much money now as possible, to carry out much needed work in the quieter months, but in reality, I expect he has given himself an enormous amount of negative reviews. You can’t charge £30 per night for what they are offering. If it had been £20 or less I’d have given a better rating. Such a shame because he and his family seem like lovely people. I can’t give a decent rating but I wish them all the luck for the future. If they manage to turn this site around we will definitely revisit next year.

Liked: Fantastic site, friendly and welcoming. We can't wait to go back again, all 4 of our children had an amazing time for a week on site and the owners were helpful and all the other campers were so laid back and sociable.
