  • Family- and dog-friendly pub site a mile from Leominster on the A44
  • A 20-minute drive from Ludlow; 25 minutes from Hereford
  • Home-cooked meals, play area and 24-hour access to facilities
If you’re the type who loves the outdoors but is also rather fond of finishing a day out with a good feed and a proper pint, then it’s likely you’ll do rather well indeed at Barons Cross Inn. This welcoming pub site is in a highly handy Herefordshire location, a mile outside of Leominster on the A44 and sitting in a sweet spot in the middle of a triangle that has the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and the Brecon Beacons at its points. All of that means heaps of walks to be had in the vicinity, along with pretty villages to potter around (some of the best are linked on the nearby Black & White Trail driving route). Whatever you choose to do by day, you’ll surely be keen to get back to the pub, where the chef preps meals made with locally sourced ingredients (but kept at pub prices) and there’s a tempting collection of beers, ciders and wines. There's often something going on, such as quiz nights or live music, and everyone is made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. Restless kids and dogs can be entertained at the play area and the neighbouring field respectively. Guests have 24-hour access to a shower room and washing-up facilities. Breakfasts are available every day, and you’re welcome to light up a barbecue if you fancy doing your own cooking (there’s a supermarket five minutes’ walk away and a bus stop just outside the pub for easy access to shops).

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite, friendly staff & great pub.
Campsite is fairly even & well maintained. shower & pub toilets clean & modern. Portaloo for night time use. Playground for children & even a bouncy castle this weekend.
Pub was reasonably priced, well stocked & the food amazing. Had dinner & breakfast here & would recommend both.
Close to Leominster which is a lovely town.

Disliked: Did not dislike anything really. Yes road was a little noisy but certainly did not keep me awake. Pub a little tired in places but would def return.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Basically everything. It was so relaxed, friendly staff always willing to help or chat, clean, tidy level solid pitches, with electric and water at every pitch, within close proximity to the pub which opens at 10 for breakfast and serves food all the way through until 9 at night and stocked some lovely gins as well! The food was magnificent, not the sort of thing that you expect at a small provincial pub, very well chosen ingredients cooked to perfection. We ate three meals there. The chef really knows his stuff and I had one of the best steaks I have had anywhere. Everything was clear, we checked in at the pub, the landlady showed us where everything was, and was really warm and friendly. The shower was open all night which was really nice and the pub toilets and the overnight portable toilet were clean. There is a baby changer in the ladies and an absolutely huge bouncy castle in the beer garden which was full of kids. For somewhere which has minimal rules, it was really a lovely place to stay as everyone was respectful and happy. Lots of kids, lots of dogs, lots of people eating in the beer garden, very Darling Buds of May, and a rare gem of a place. Lovely! No wonder the place was packed. We will definitely be back soon!

Disliked: They had some internet problems whilst we were there but did say the wi-fi isn't always the best anyway. If you are in larger vehicle the track is slightly narrow but perfectly manageable even for really big things like us as long as you are paying attention, but that is just being nit-picky and is out of the control of the owners, so nothing really to report here.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Haven't stayed here for quite a long time, but we were very pleased with the overall visit. Nina and her team are doing a great job with everything. The pub is looking much better than the last time we stayed. The food is really good, and plentiful. Staff are very friendly. Good sized pitches, well looked after, with water and ehu on each pitch. Will definitely be back.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The pitch size was good and the adjacent field to exercise the dogs.

Disliked: Untidy dirty site, pub toilets were not very clean, portaloo for use through the night was unclean and the door would not stay shut. No washing up facilities as described.
Overall the site needs a good tidy up. Theres an old broken aviary thats overgrown and needs pulling down in the beer garden. And the field adjacent is turning into a scrap yard. The pictures on the website are clearly very old. We were looking forward to our stay as we thought how nice it looked, wow were we mislead. We booked for two nights but only stayed for one. We won't be going back.

From the manager: What an exceptionally rude and inaccurate review this is. As with anything if you had any issues whatsoever you should have come to us and expressed those, not waited until you got home and then flamed a very hard working business, lowering our score average unfairly. Out of the reviews recieved from the other people staying on site at the exact same time as you were, we recieved 9 x 10 star ratings and 1x 9 star rating. Are we to believe that all of those other people are mistaken in their reviews and yours is accurate when we were prasied for the cleanliness of our facilities, with people using words like 'amazing', 'excellent', 'first rate'? I don't think so.
I will address two points you have raised however. We have left the old aviary as a wilding area, and we make no apoligy for this, it's a great wildlife habitat being home to many insects, mamals and amphibians as it is intentionally left undisturbed for them. It's our way of giving something back for creating hardstandings and the constant mowing that the beer garden and the camping fields require which damages their habitat. We use no pesticides here and don't kill the moles for similar reasons. Sorry you found that offensive.
The second point I will address is the 'scrap yard' as you so crassly call it. This is not part of the campsite at all, and is a private area where we keep our autograss cars. Again we make no apology for that, it wasn't a space you hired or that affects campers in any shape or form.
We have a blanket policy of charging £25 per night per pitch for up to 6 people and their vehicle with water and electric at every point and with a free mains shower which is open 24 hours per day.
The campsite is supposed to be relaxed and friendly, it's not the Waldorf Astoria. I think you'll find that if you go to stay there it'll be considerably more expensive than in your case the £12.50 per night each which we charghed you, but I don't expect even they would meet your expectations.
As for not staying here again, the frogs, moles, insects etc welcome that (and the mammals running the campsite).
I hope you find somewhere more suited to your exceptionally exacting standards for your next holiday and don't dso this to anyone else.

Local attractions

Start with a little stroll around Leominster, a mile away – it’s a handsome market town with a grand priory and streets lined with independent shops to poke around in. For more active times, it’s also got a swimming pool and a golf course (about 10 minutes’ drive from the pub). If you’d like to take your urban wanders a little further, check out the foodies’ fave Ludlow (20 minutes’ drive) or head into Hereford (25 minutes) to see the cathedral, the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Hereford Cider Museum. Keeping it all a little more country, venture to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes) to get up close to the animals, wander through Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (15 minutes) or learn a little bit about cheesemaking at Monkland Cheese Dairy (five minutes). If you’re heading out for a hike, the Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills and Brecon Beacons are all within 40 minutes’ drive.
