  • Remote Herefordshire cabin overlooking the Wye Valley at How Caple
  • A 20-minute drive to Ledbury, Symonds Yat and the Malvern Hills
  • Cosy couples’ retreat with a woodburner, outdoor bath and firepit
For stunning views of the Wye Valley, a romantic retreat just for two, and a little bit of luxury to boot, it’s three big ticks for White House Hideaway at How Caple in Herefordshire. This cosy wooden cabin stands in a field on its own and is kitted out with everything to make a country break as effortless as possible. These are namely: a proper double bed, a well-equipped kitchenette and an ensuite with a hot shower. A woodburner (logs supplied) keeps everyone warm, and the cabin is powered by solar energy, so eco-credentials are tiptop too. And you'll see why you'd want to preserve the environment here, thanks to gorgeous views down the valley from the picture windows. The cabin’s remote farm location, means you’ll be largely undisturbed, so there’s time to relish those views while breakfasting in bed, cooking up a feast on the firepit or steaming gently in the outside bath – just the spot for admiring the glittering Milky Way on clear nights. For a bit more activity, head down to the private pebble beach on the River Wye for paddleboarding, canoeing and wild swimming, or if you fancy a ramble, follow the River Wye Walk along its meanders. Other activities bookable on arrival at the cabin include fishing, foraging classes and farm tours. It's worth noting that as it’s so remote, you’ll have to do a bit of walking to get to your peaceful retreat (please bring wellies). When you park in the lay-by, you’ll see a wheelbarrow waiting for you to shift your gear to the cabin – which is easily spotted in the field.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to keep you occupied on site, but should you choose to explore further into Herefordshire, the lovely market towns of Ross-on-Wye (15 minutes’ drive) and Ledbury (20 minutes) both have a photogenic mix of half-timbered cottages and Georgian houses, plus lots of antique shops to nose around. If you fancy dipping into Wales, venture over the border to Monmouth (25 minutes) to visit its castle and museums. If you’d prefer to stick to pedal power, the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) has several way-marked routes for all abilities, with lots of far-reaching views. For more intense action, go rock climbing at the landmark Symonds Yat (20 minutes) or join a whitewater rafting expedition (15 minutes) along the river. A little tipple? Learn about regional cider production at Hereford Cider Museum Trust (half an hour), and tour Westons Cider Mill (10 minutes), where you can sample the finished product and take home liquid souvenirs of your Herefordshire stay.
