  • Rural camping at an equestrian centre 20 minutes’ drive from Hereford
  • Hampton Court Castle 15 minutes’ drive; Carding Mill Valley an hour
  • Grass pitches; horses in the fields; communal firepit
Surrounded by peaceful Herefordshire countryside, the level grass pitches at Valley View Ranch are set on an American ranch-themed equestrian centre. That’s as near as you get to heaven for pony-mad kids (and adults, to be honest), who can gaze out over fields full of handsome American quarter horses, as well as their chums, the Pygmy goats and free-range chickens. While there’s a back-to-basics vibe on the camping field (that means no electricity), modern facilities at the site do include a wooden shower block. Should you be feeling sociable, you can meet up with fellow guests around the communal campfire to chat over your day’s adventures. If you prefer to be self-sufficient, pick up supplies from the supermarkets of Hereford (20 minutes’ drive), and rustle up a barbecue at your pitch. Don’t leave your dogs out of the fun either, as they are very welcome on site and there are loads of rural walks to be had straight from the camping field.

Local attractions

Cyclists and ramblers have not one, but two, spectacular Areas of Natural Beauty for their explorations. Try the heathland tracks through Carding Mill Valley (an hour’s drive) in the Shropshire Hills AONB, or scramble up to the Worcestershire Beacon (half an hour) in the Malvern Hills AONB for spectacular views over Herefordshire to the Black Mountains in Wales (weather permitting, of course). For gentler family ambles, follow the sculpture trail to meet the Gruffalo, bears and owls in Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum (15 minutes). Other family-centric attractions hereabouts include Small Breeds Farm Park (45 minutes’ drive), where the kids can meet rare sheep breeds, fluffy owlets and alpacas. Hampton Court Castle (15 minutes) is a gem of a Jacobean country house with a vast collection of weaponry to keep kids fascinated, as well as lots of trees to climb in the sprawling park. Should you hit a rainy day, keep everyone happy with an indoor swim at Halo Hereford Leisure Pool (25 minutes), or head for the Museum of Cider (25 minutes) to learn how apples were milled and pressed in days gone by, before enjoying a tasty cake or two in the tea room.

Liked: Super spot - so lovely to watch the horses, shower was fab and left in peace- which I love

Disliked: Washing up area was not useable as full of stuff! I get that the horses are paramount here (and they should be) but would have been good to be able to use this

Liked: -Peace & quiet of the area and of the campsite itself as it only accepts a few campers per night so plenty of space for those staying without being on top of each other. -Purpose built Toilet & shower facilities a bonus for a pop up campsite -Washing up facilities also very much appreciated -Lovely welcome from host who responded quickly to an email enquiry we had ahead of arriving. -Free wifi available on site

Disliked: Postcode took us to a road at the corner of the property but it was not obvious from there where to go to find entrance so more signage / what three words reference would be helpful.
