General

  • Quiet secluded site three miles from the cathedral city of Hereford
  • Close to the walking trail along the banks of the river Wye
  • Wild camping with toilet, shower and dogs and campfires allowed

Have peace, have quiet, have sightseeing, walks and books, all in a quiet secluded setting with active options available close by.

The Valletts is a peaceful and remote site in the grounds of a farmhouse three miles from the cathedral city and museums of Hereford and eight miles from the bookish town of Hay-on-Wye. Footpaths run from the site down to the River Wye, where you can join the 136-mile path along the river's banks, passing ancient sites such as the neolithic (and rather fab) Arthur's Stone.

Canoeing, golf and horse riding are also easy to access in the surrounding area – but whichever activity/peaceful pursuit you pick, do carve out time for a pint of the local cider to finish off your Herefordshire day…

The site aims for a wild camping experience and facilities are basic; a hot shower and a toilet are available and there’s an outside tap for washing up.

Dogs and campfires are allowed - please bring your own firewood (available from the local garage) and scoops/bags to clean up after your dog.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

This is a wild camping site and the grass has been mown, but please be aware that it's still rough pasture rather than neat lawn.

It was exactly what we expected from wild camping. We had loads of space for our tents. Beautiful stars at night and stunning views during the day. Fantastic base to do everything we wanted. The hosts were amazing, so accommodating and great local knowledge. They were Absolutely fantastic with children, and my son cried when he had to leave Matthew. I couldn’t praise this place more. I wish them all the best for the future and if we are up that way again, we shall be returning.

    Disliked:

    Nothing. 5 stars isn’t enough.

Really friendly, welcoming owners. Really relaxed campsite, not fussed about lots of rules so it was really easy to pitch up wherever, light a campfire and chill. Kids were free to explore the woods and the farm, loved feeding chickens, fussing dogs, and so on. The rudimentary chemical toilets and one shower all in mini tents in the stable might be a bit off putting for some, bit it's fine if you don't mind a bit of basic camping!

    Disliked:

Might be handy to have access to a drinking water supply /pot washing tap.

Very enjoyable, peaceful location and the owners proved to be amazing and would make it there duty to assist you were possible. We had a fantastic time and owe a lot of our enjoyment to the owners. They also have a big wooded area where the kids had a great time making dens and picking blackberries.

    Disliked:

If I had to choose one thing then it would be the toilet area... although these were pretty cool considering the location.

The Valletts was an amazing campsite and we had a fantastic stay. They accommodated us at very last minute (booked at 8:30pm and arrived at 10:30pm the same night!!!) And were so very friendly.

The site itself is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by fields and a wooded area. It is so very quiet and peaceful with some lovely animals around. The 3 sheepdogs are gorgeous and really friendly.

Perfect location as although in a quiet area, it is only actually around 5 mins from Hereford which is ideal for the shops.

The owners were so friendly and helpful, they did everything possible to make the stay as brilliant as they could. We got up after a very cold first night, to find they had rigged up a hot shower unit in the stable, which was especially appreciated after I had been swimming in the Wye.

Facilities were exactly as advertised - BASIC, but clean and shower warm. It was inside a stable which had horses next door which was of great amusement when in the shower! Don't stay here if you want a luxury toilet and shower block because this is a wild campsite!

Perfect for couples, families or groups wanting a quiet and relaxed holiday. The owners went out their way to give kids onsite experiences such as sitting on a horse, walking round the farm and meeting the sheepdogs.

Will most deffinately be back again, was so lovely to be away from the hustle and bustle of life and just relax in such a beautiful place.

Thanks once again for a brilliant stay, and for accommodating us at such short notice when we had been let down by another site.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

    Disliked:

Nothing specific, although a few constructive bits of feedback (which was already discussed with the owners on site as they strive to make the site better constantly).

A small charging point for phones would be appreciated in the stables, as would a small freezer for campers to freeze ice blocks.

The toilets would benefit from being raised on a block, as currently they are quiet low. This would help people with aching joints to get on and off much easier.

Could do better 21/08/2018

This site is certainly something different, and certainly 'wild' is one way of describing the camping there. Well located, only 3-miles from Hereford, it is an ideal launching point for forays into Hereford and camping under the trees that fringe the site is very pleasant.

    Disliked:

However, my young son and I left early, forgoing our pre-paid second night, as the toilet and shower available in the house are not really appropriate, and the outside toilets have nothing to do with accepted standards of the genre, although they are very entertaining.

It is a shame that the owners seem to have approached camping as an after thought and the facilities they are offering - which read better than the actualité - and the general air of disorganisation and disrepair is disappointing.

Come on The Valletts, 'could do better' - even on the wild side - is the end of term report!

Local attractions

There's loads of lovely countryside around here for days out around the local footpaths, strolling alongside the Wye or pedalling peacefully among the Herefordshire countryside. It's easy to access the 136 miles of the Wye Valley Walk from here, for a hike six miles hence to Arthur's Stone, the Neolithic burial chamber  set high above Herefordshire's Golden Valley.

For more organised outdoor days, a golf course is within three miles, horse riding within five and guided canoe trips along the Wye within six – or you could sample sections of the region's other walking paths on the Marches Way, Beacons Way, Usk Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke Path.

In town, Herefordshire's capital Hereford is an ancient city with plenty of old piles to see, including its famed cathedral with chained library, medieval manuscripts and spectacular 13th-century Mappi Mundi: go see. There's a cider museum too, and a cider route, covering the apple (and perry pear) goodness in town and around the county.

What goes excellently with cider? Books, that's what. Get along to Hay-on-Wye eight miles away to mooch around its dozens of bookshops, then take a tome to somewhere peaceful in the Brecon Beacons National Park or along the Herefordshire Cider Route.

Must see

  • Goodrich Castle (14.1 miles)
  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (16.5 miles)
  • Eastnor Castle (16.9 miles)
