  • Wild(ish) camping with spectacular mountain views in Herefordshire
  • Grosmont Castle 15 minutes’ drive; Symonds Yat 25 minutes
  • Wild swimming and walks on site; five minutes’ walk to the pub
If you like the sound of camping amid 360-degree views of Herefordshire countryside, you’ll probably be very happy at The Dragons Gate. On the outskirts of Garway village, the site sits close to the English-Welsh border so you can gaze over Welsh mountains from your pitch in England. And talking of pitches, there are just a few scattered over 10 acres in a sheltered valley, so your privacy is all but guaranteed. Now, this is wild(ish) camping for those of you not quite prepared to go the whole hog and get completely off grid. There is a shared basic toilet and shower facilities, access to water (non-drinking, please bring bottled water) and a phone signal – but make sure you bring a battery pack to charge your mobiles, as there is no power. If you’re content to hang out on site, by day you can go wild swimming on the farm (by arrangement please), or clamber up Garway Hill from the pitches to see if you can spot the wild ponies that graze the land. Hire firepits and buy wood for cosy nights around the campfire – get a barbecue going if you fancy dining alfresco, or head on down to the village pub (five minutes’ walk) for decent local fare. As this is a peaceful spot with only the sound of birdsong breaking the silence, the owners ask that you don’t play music on site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (lake view)

Liked: The peace and quite, the distance between the pitches, and super views. Oh and the fire pits to hire were brilliant - sat sitting next to the pond with a fire going watching the swifts and fish. Pure relaxation. Wild-ish
