General
- Smart Herefordshire glamping on a16th-century organic farm
- A 10-minute drive to Hay-on Wye and the Brecon Beacons
- Peak-season restaurant and bar on site; farm activities available
It’s safe to say that the drovers that once roamed this land with their animals would never have stayed in anything like the tents at Drovers Rest – this Herefordshire glamping site is posh indeed, with guests treated to a stay that mixes a fair bit of luxury in with a good dose of fresh air.
This is a farm site where you’ll be sleeping under canvas for an outdoor-adventure vibe, but you’ll be doing so in proper beds, with all bed linen provided. Towels are supplied too, as are lots of handy things from kitchen facilities to electric sockets for gadget charging. And, because you’ll no doubt want to spend some time outside, each tent also has a firepit where you can keep warm and maybe try cooking over the flames.
Not sure your fire cookery skills are up to it? Head to the farm’s restaurant, which opens in peak season and cooks all its meals over fire, using produce from its own fields or sourced locally. It’s also got a fully licensed bar serving up local drinks and farm-inspired cocktails. (If you’re here at a time when these aren’t open, don’t panic – it’s only about a 10-minute drive to Hay-on-Wye, which has plenty of nice pubs and restaurants, plus shops for self-catering supplies.)
Getting out to explore your surroundings is highly recommended here – the local area is known as the Golden Valley, and it’s so dreamy it inspired the creation of C S Lewis’ fictional land Narnia. That said, you should also dedicate some hours to time spent on the farm – activities like egg collecting and animal feeding are included in the price of your stay.

Local attractions
First port of call has to be Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes’ drive) – the town is best known for its many bookshops and book festival, but it’s also got a castle, a gin distillery and a lovely market. You can hire canoes in town to paddle down the River Wye, or head out for a walk up to Hay Bluff or along trails including the Wye Valley Walk or Offa’s Dyke Path.
Hay-on-Wye is just up at the top end of the Brecon Beacons National Park, so there are plenty more walks around – both gentle strolls and more challenging clambers. If it’s something else you have in mind for your outdoor days, have a word on site, as the farm has partners that can sort things like horse riding, fishing and clay pigeon shooting.
For other days out, you could meet more animals at the Small Breeds Farm Park (half an hour’s drive) or head to Hereford (40 minutes) to see the Mappa Mundi and half-timbered houses.
